Integrated Studies Honors Program

I’m a recipient of the Fulmor scholarship, which supposedly guarantees me admission into Davis’s ISHP. After reading some other stuff about this program versus the Honors Challenge, I’m pretty sure I made a pretty good choice by accepting this one. However, I’m finding it extremely hard to ascertain information regarding exactly what I will be doing in this program. I’ve got a few questions:

-The ISHP site says that it places “emphasis” on the first year. Can anyone explain exactly what that emphasis is?
-How closely do members interact with faculty?
-Are there research opportunities available within my actual major (economics, if it matters) in the later years of the program?
-How advantageous is it to stay in the program for all four years?

Thanks a bunch.

You can scroll around and look at the course guide. I’m also a fulmor scholarship recipient and chose to accept because other people in the past really enjoyed the program. Plus the programs and special classes are really unique.

Oh and I look forward to meeting you in the fall!

I have a question for past members of ishp. i know in our contract we said we would fill out regular housing so under preferences, it says programs. however under programs, it does not list ishp, so did you just pick the option of opt out?

also, did you pick double double double?

I poked around that site before and found it to be a little bit more general than I wanted, but thanks anyway :p. yeah it’ll be cool to meet up, we definitely will since we’re gonna be in the same building.

I called and asked about the housing app the other day and they told me to pretty much put whatever the hell because they’ll just email us all specific instructions to get into Miller after June 10.

Oh, and I just found out that Fulmor scholars aren’t guaranteed placement in the program. Does anyone know anything about the chances of getting in with this scholarship?

Regents is the only scholarship that will guarantee you admission into ISHP. However, when I visited on the Regents Overnight, most of the people I met didn’t have Regents Scholarships. I don’t think there are that many of us taking Davis’ offer and there are a few hundred spots in the program so you should probably get it (I’m guessing you got the same one as my friend who said it was the second best scholarship at like $6000/year?).

Oh about the program itself. It’s pretty dang nice. Miller Hall is one of the best dorms on campus. When they say they place an emphasis on the first year they mean that after the first year you don’t do that much with it. Sophomore year is just a few seminar classes and Junior/Senior year is the thesis, on which you will be able to work with professors in your field of study. They have a few periodical gatherings where you get to meet professors one-on-one too.

All right, that sounds good to me. I couldn’t make it on admit day, so I guess I kind of missed a lot. I’m not getting scholarship money on a per-year basis like that, so your friend must’ve gotten a different scholarship. I have to say I’m a little nervous about getting in now… anyway, thanks for the info on the program. That’s all kind of what I figured, but I couldn’t find anything stated in clear terms on the site. Now I guess I’d kind of just like to know specifics about the depth of the thesis and what it’s like to work on one.

I wouldnt worry too much about getting in. As long as you submitted the contract to participate before may 1. In the email they said there are 114 spots available and I read that one year they expanded it to 170 due to increased interest in the program. So I think our spots are reserved :)

from someone who’s been in ISHP:

Sweet. Thanks very much. I’m pretty excited about this :p

So I am a fulmor scholar and I sent on my application for ishp, but today I got an email to apply for dhc. I don’t really have time to write the 4 essays so is it necessary for me to apply?

Never mind! haha i just got my acceptance letter
