Huge fafsa mistake for nyu!

I found out my social security on the FAFSA is wrong. I emailed NYU inquiring about what I should do but the financial aid office hasn't emailed me back. Should I go further and call them up.

The SAR was sent to me in the mail. Should I just correct it on that and send it in?

Any opinions would be greatly appreciated!

Anyone?..

Yes, all them on Monday to clear things up.

Most schools link the FAFSA to the SSN in their system. A wrong FAFSA SSN can lead to the FAFSA never getting linked to your account at the school … it will sit in a suspense file in their system.

Incorrect SSN’s are a big problem for schools, and how they need to be corrected depends on their internal processes. You need to call on Monday, and ask how it should be corrected. Make sure the person on the other end of the call is not a student helper … it needs to be at least a financial aid officer, in order for you to get good information.

You need to contact the FAFSA hotline and find out how to correct your FAFSA error.

We had the OPPOSITE happen…DS put the correct social on his FAFSA and Profile forms but oops…wrong on one of the college aps. We figured it out when a friend who applied to the same school got HIS excellent merit award and DS didn’t hear (DS’s stats were much better AND he had already been accepted to the school). We contacted them figured it out. My guess is they had his finaid forms in ONE pile (with that social) and the application in another (with THAT social). We never would have known if we hadn’t had a friend whose kid applied to the same school.

I do not advise contacting the FAFSA helpline. Why? Because if the school has already imported your FAFSA into their system, changing it without consulting them first can be a major issue all 4 years. Trust me, I have had to deal with this firsthand. The best thing to do is ask the school how they want it handled so that everything syncs up correctly. It may be that the way FAFSA would advise is what the school wants, but it may not be.

Thumper, my own son did that! What usually happens in that case is that the student’s info is under the app SSN, and when the FAFSA comes in with the correct SSN, it gets assigned to a student who did not apply (as it links with the SSN). Therefore, no aid package for your kid. It is actually much easier to fix this issue than the incorrect SSN on the FAFSA.
