Huge hook?

I am wondering if this is a major hook:

Owner of an online website that provides services as well as forum access to people. Over 10k+ members and is growing rapidly.

Site featured on attack of the show (tech tv) and I appeared on tv for interview on the show.

And I am still considering if creating the first chess club in my school is worthy of attempting.

Thank you!

they will think you have no life. jk i don't think its a major hook but is a good ec none the less.

if you made the forum using packaged stuff, its not a great achievement meaning anyone could do it. a good hook is something that not a lot of kids would have access to doing.

It's certainly going to impressive, especially at schools like Wharton.

Thank you for your comments...

May I ask if creating the first chess club in my school is worthy of attempting.

Thanks!

It will be ho hum in contrast to your business. I'd focus on making that as big and succesful as possible.

And here comes the rest of my profile..

around 3.0 gpa (no ap, schools offers them though)
2340 sat 2380 composite score
800 chinese 750-800 us history (didn't take yet)

with that considered, is there any top school that will be interested in me?

a bit mroe info bout the site...hmm

I did only start the website 4 month ago and besides perhaps gaiaonline.com i think it is the fastest growing forum out there. sadly, it is built using vbulletin (packaged stuff) but i think it is the first/biggest forum out there that offers free q&a services (like the paid answering service provided by google but its free]. we also have an exclusive/one of a kind forum section that searches for celebrity's personal information for valued members (people with a certain required amount of posts or more).

other ec..

helps out in my dad's company a bit
distinguished speaker in the junior debate

ya besides my website, my ec is really weak so i was thinknig bout that chess club

hmm ya thats about it.

Thanks for reading and please provide some insight!

Well what schools are you looking at? Clearly the 3.0/no APs is a killer at the top schools, but below those I really think they would xonsider that your business success means a lot.

3.0 gpa? you can't get in with a horrible gpa like that. and you didnt take any APs either

what it comes down to is that your transcript will be the most important piece of your application

its a cool site dont get me wrong.. but i dont think an anime forum is going to impress the admissions ppl very much. im just being realistic heere.. not putting your efforts down.

unfortunately, it doesn't matter how involved you in it; it all depends on how much admissions values it. Let me give you an example of why it may be unfair. I created a website right after the tsunami in asia. It was like an informative website on donating to reputable charities. It explained the situation, how little money could help, and descriptions and links to different well-known charities. It's not something big and it only took me a few hours to code/register/etc. There was about 4000 unique visits and reported $1000 dollars donataed total through use of this site. Now, compared to yours mine is really nothing.

But, when an admissions officer looks at both of ours, I believe they would see more character through my EC. My dedication to the community, humanity, and taking initiative during a disaster(I can't donate money caus i have no money, so tried to help others in the process of donating). I don't know if they will even look at your website or not. You must do a lot of work maintaining the site etc., but how does it show your character, your morales, or your committment to an activity.

Maybe I'm wrong, and in that case someone correct me.

besides your gpa..stats are great.. i would look for good schools in the 26-50 range(USNews), but don't shy away from better schools if you want. Your goal is to get into one of them, not all of them.

Your company won't be enough to overcome the 3.0 and no APs at most good schools.

Thank you for your inputs. oh no gaiaonline.com is not my..LOL. I would quit school and leech off it for the rest of my life if it really is. it has over 2.5million members with almost 30k people on at any given time.

I will not say out my website because i really don't want this to look like an ad but we are a 'help' website, not an anime forum. we help people to locate certain things they can't find on the net, etc.

26-50?

how is ucla? seems realistic for me? or ny stern?

thank you!

up.............

Well, you will have to name the site to colleges. They'll decide how impressed they are.

Ok I will be gone from here for a few days...

Hope you guys can keep this post bumped up and give me a rough prediction on the following schools....thanks alot guys, will miss cc....

NY Stern
Cal Hass
UCLA
UCSD
UCI
Stanford..(ya i know..lol)
UCSC
UCD
Northwestern
Chicago

majoring in econ/maybe double major in marketing

Please give me a percent, eg ucla 0.1%

Thank you once again!

not to be harsh, but I truly believe this is accurate:

Stanford: near-impossible reach

Northwestern/Chicago: high reach
NY Stern: high reach
Cal Haas: high reach
UCLA: high reach

UCSD: slight reach

UCI/UCD: match

UCSC: safe match

Vehement: PM me if you want to chat about this somemore.

Your test scores shows you are a very smart person. Yet you only maintains a 3.0 and didnt take any AP's. If I were an adcom, my impression is you spent a lot of your time on your site and that was where your motivation is. The cool site with the Anime theme is a hit or miss thing. More miss than hits because adcoms aren't usually into ethnic toon's. I would mention it but only casually and not make it as your hook. I see the potentials there but you have not really developed as a student or made the effort. Depending on what you want to major it, if you want to continue with web content development / management (you'd mentioned business school), you might want to include Carnegie Mellon, Cal Poly St.Luis Opis, UCSB.

Lastly, with your native intell and energy, why not look into community college transfer program if you still want to graduate from UC Berkeley or LA?

Vehement, schools, when assesing you probable success, want to see that you have staying power. Anyone can have one good idea. Your job is to show them that you will stick with it and perform. If your
GPA makes you look like a slacker, that's pretty hard to overcome. Show some dedication somewhere and apply to top schools as a junior. My own son went through this and nicely recovered.

man I hate to tell you this but you've got little chance at any of those schools. All the UCs weight GPA VERY heavily in their admission decisions. Your 3.0 will keep your out of even UCSC.

But there is hope. Do you have an upward trend. By upward trend I mean the trend ending in like a 3.7-3.9? If you show such a tred you may be able to persuade adcoms that you turned around.

And yeah. That amine manga game site isnt gonna do much for your college app.
