Hum Core book?

Pkg Humanities Core Course Reader & Britten War Req Cd
Pan
Optional
ISBN: 9780558831882

Is this really needed? I can't seem to find it anywhere other than the bookstore and it's a bit pricey if I'm not going to use it...

ALSO, there are no books listed for my PsyBeh 11A class...so no books?

Well, if it says it’s “Optional” then I guess it’s…optional lol

A “Course Reader” and a cd doesn’t sound important anyways, but let’s hear what other peeps have to say about that.

Is there another humcore reader listed…? I know my year there’s 2 required humcore-specific books (made by humcore faculty) and thus can only be bought from UCI or other students. There was the writing guide, and then the reader. The reader is most likely required because that’s where all the shorter essays are.

<a href=“EEE+ Home | UCI”>EEE+ Home | UCI;
maybe the Britten CD is what’s optional? i can’t tell if what you need would just be on the website…

but, since you can’t get a discount price anyways - unless last year they use the same version you can buy it from the facebook group Sell Textbooks Directly UCI (see the book thread), you might want to just wait until you get to UCI and get it/check it out welcome week or something. or wait and see if they change it from optional to required.

Nope, there’s no other reader listed…
Hm. I guess I’ll find out when school starts.
Thanks!

haha this was really confusing for me too! I am also taking Hum Core this year. I don’t know if you got the email they sent us, but just in case, I copied part of the email that pertained to whether or not the HCC Guide and Reader is truly OPTIONAL:

“Please use this link to access the webpage and order the HCC Guide and Reader, which will be Federal Expressed to the shipping address you provide: [Pearson Learning Solutions | University of California - Irvine](Pearson Learning Solutions | University of California - Irvine) The UCI Bookstore will be stocking a small supply of this volume as well for any students who may encounter difficulties in ordering it online or having the book shipped to an address. If you will need to purchase the HCC Guide and Reader package from the Bookstore, you will need to inquire at the Coursebooks counter, and the price may be higher than the price online. Thus, the Bookstore has listed this an a optional purchase from them; however, it is required for the course.”

So, in summary, IT IS REQUIRED. If you go to zotportal and login, they actually tell you it’s required. But since you can get it cheaper online, the UCI Bookstore listed it as “optional”–I’m guessing they don’t want everyone to order from the UCIBookstore since they only have limited copies for those who can’t get it online.

Also, I did some digging on what moey said. On the Anteater Forum (anteaterforum.com), there are alot of previous Hum Core students who are selling their books. And I was able to pinpoint the “2 required Hum Core-specific books”:

HUMANITIES CORE COURSE GUIDE & WRITER’S HANDBOOK
LOSH

HUMANITIES CORE COURSE READER
LUPTON

BUT these books seem to be DIFFERENT from
Pkg Humanities Core Course Reader & Britten War Req Cd
Pan,
which is supposed to be the HCC GUIDE and READER together (in one package), as opposed to 2 separate required books.

From what I see, I think the “Hum-Core-specific” book actually CHANGED this year, since the authors are even different; this probably means we can’t buy from previous year students. But they seemed to have compiled the READER and the GUIDE together in one package and will thus cost alot less than if we were required to buy them separately. So this might be a plus.

yeahh… it’s a lot cheaper. i think the reader alone was at least $45 my year and it was terrible because i didn’t know about selling books to other students. (UCI never/rarely buybacks custom UCI books)

Yeah it was the email that confused me!
And I already bought it.
Thanks, guys!
