Human Development

i'd like to learn more about Human Development, so please share any information you have on the major. the curriculum, skills required, department quality, type of research/work, opportunities post-grad, general difficulty, etc.

i know it's pre-major but let's get some perspective not readily found on the ucsd website lol. surprisingly there wasn't a single CC post/thread on this major that i could find, so this is for all the prospective Human Development majors!

Thanks!

For all intents and purposes, HDP is really Developmental Psychology (in scope and curriculum) where you either concentrate on Biological Development, Cognitive Development, or Social Factors.

so would you say it seems like a good major for someone interested in teaching children as a career?

what have you heard about the quality of the HD program?

thanks!

It’s as strong a candidate as any. Supplement your major with a minor in EDS:

[Education Studies - UC San Diego](http://www-tep.ucsd.edu/)

This will help you get your credentials if you want to teach in any school. Part of the minor is also to get in-classroom practicum experience, which will help you determine whether or not the career is for you.

No idea on its quality since you don’t normally see HDP programs outside of Psychology departments.

do you know anyone under this major? how would you gauge it’s popularity (very unpopular, uncommon, fair, etc)? thanks Oyama!

It’s a fairly popular double major with Psychology. I know maybe 10 people, personally, that graduated with this major.
