Humanities at CMU

How is CMU for students who want to majpor in the humanities, or is it really just for math/science kids and then drama/arts students? Can you take any drama courses if you are not a drama major?

The only drama courses you can take if you are not a drama major are Acting for Non-Majors, Dance for Non-Majors, and the History of Drama Series.

CMU is not well-known for its Humanities, and its emphasis is definitely placed on the other schools.

I always hear that CMU is bad for humanities and that it is basically a tech school, however, I know tons of HSS (Humanities and Social Sciences) kids that are incredibly happy here. They say the smaller size of the school is great for interacting with professors, and I know that there are tons of psych. studies and the like going on here, especially with brain imaging (which crosses over into the other types of science). There is also a fantastic creative writing program here, which I heard is wonderful. Ecomomics is still in HSS which is a phenomenal program, considering the strength of our buisness school.

There are of course negatives, but I think you've already heard all of those.

If i major in economics in the Humanities college, aren't i better off majoring in economics in the Tepper school of business? what are the differences between the two colleges in term of an economics major?

i thought only H&SS offered economics...not tepper

As of last semester, Tepper now offers the Economics major, but it is still simultaneously in HSS.. it is kind of weird how they have it, but for Economics I believe you would still apply as a Humanities student. I'd contact CMU for more information about this though.

And although CMU is not particularly known for humanities, that is not to say the humanities school doesnt hold prestige at the university just as the other schools do. The creative writing program is one of the top in the nation.. psychology is great.. and there are many other great programs.. as the previously post clarifies many students in the HSS school are extremely happy, and I do not consider it any less significant than the other schools.
