Huntsman Chances for an International Student?

I’m a junior and I REALLY REALLY want to apply to Huntsman next year.

The reason for that is my international background and my strong interest in business.

I’m Chinese, born in China, but moved to Japan when I was 4.
After spending 12 years there, I moved to the U.S. 2.5 years ago where I started from ESL, and here I am, applying to US colleges.

Japanese is naturally my strongest language, but I think I want to further study Chinese. Fortunately enough, my parents never let me forget my native language (Chinese), and I can still speak, read, and write in Chinese perfectly, and I take great pride in that lol But since I haven’t really had exposure to business Chinese, I decided that I wanted to apply to Huntsman with Chinese as my target language. I hope to stress the fact that I learned English in 2.5 years and that I also picked up French pretty quickly in 2 years (see below in the stats) so to have an international hook going on.

My business hooks… are winning the State Economics Challenge and participating (5th) in the MidWest regionals Economics Challenge. Next year I’m hoping for another shot for the regionals, and maybe even nationals (my school is very strong in econ challenge). Also, I almost likely will be on my school’s Fed Challenge team, which is also very, very strong (runner-up state championship last year). I’m getting an internship from a local company this summer too.

lol sorry for the long introduction here are my stats

SAT (havent taken yet, but projecting V730/M800/W750)
SAT II – Chinese 800
– Japanese 790 (oops lol)
– Math IIC (projecting 800)
– French (hopefully above 700?)

Asian/Female

Very competitive public school in suburban Detroit

Doesn’t Rank (GPA3.91 UW)

Full IB Candidate (taking Math HL)
independently studying AP Psychology

As for the extracurriculars (started late, didn’t know you had to have all the fancy stuff to get into US colleges):

–Student Council (11, hopefully 12 too)
–Founder/President of Project Hope Club, a Chiese government supported program to help poor kids to have the opportunities to go to school. Currently fundraising, will accumilate about 5,000 dollars by the end of senior year
–Financial Manager of the School Yearbook
–Financial/Advertising Manager of organizing the school fundraiser event, Golf Outing 2006 (if you live close, you should come too!
–A Cappella Choir, as well as Phoenix Choir (a bigger school choir) 3 years
–Jazz Band (Piano) 2 years
–National Honor Society
–National Merit Semifinalist (mostlikely)

kinda random, but my drawing won 1st place in Central Florida Art Festival (I used to live there for 9 months before moving to MI. long story)

Teachers like me, and my counselor likes me too!

I don’t think I’ll have a green card by the time I apply to penn ED, so I will be applying with an international status. No Financial Aid if that increases my chances of being admitted (Thank you sooo much mom and dad!)

I was wondering if you could tell me what you think my chances are, what areas are my weakness, and whether or not an International status would affect me in any ways.

Thanks for reading the lengthy post! :)

Another asian female eh? Kidding.

You actually soud like a great candidate. The only catch might be with your target language being native. It looks better if you target something else, but with a total of 4 languages under your belt... you should do fine.

I'd say you're probably an eccelent candidate as long as you can clearly demostrate that Penn is the only place for you. I don't know how many times I've said this, but Penn wants people who want to come to Penn.

Good luck.

And yes, not needing fin. aid will help you significantly.

lol yeah im just another asian female. college admissions are the only time when i wish i werent an asian female.

ok... but what choices have i got? i dont wanna target japanese cause i already like, know the language. french... its a beautiful language but i dont think i'll ever have the chance to use french after college. china's whats hot now, and i cant let that slip away from me.

ah! this is complicated and its driving me crazy. but yeah, thanks for the reply! i'll just have to work extra hard on chinese to become competitive then... touch road.

Wharton: Hey, I'm also applying to Huntsman next year, and I'm targeting in my native language (Mandarin). Is it a weakness to target a native language? If so, I can choose French as my target, but I'd much rather focus on an East Asian language.

lhh421: You seem to have a good grasp on all four of the languages that you speak. However, be able to communicate your interest in international affairs and business, both verbally and in writing. Unless I'm mistaken, Huntsman wants to know that you are well-versed in international affairs and can apply your multilinguism effectively.

thank you savoirfaire for the objective comments i understand from your past posts that youre going to apply to huntsman early too. i am currently working on connecting my multilinguism with business, and it was very nice of you to point that out. you seem very tough in.... well, almost every way.... and id hate to compete against you but its the world. wish both of us luck then!

oh, and i had another question. i read somewhere that penn is switching to common app? if its true, what would the essay questions be? and if its not true, would essay questions remain same every year?

I'm applying to Huntsman RD. :]

oh lol um.. sorry it might sound bad but... i feel im saved? lol

well savoirfaire you are like one of the brightest kids ive seen in this website for overachieving college bound kids. so you should get accepted at basically anywhere you apply to. no worries there, just wait one more year right? :)
