S just called to tell me he got an email from the University that classes are cancelled on Monday and they are encouraging kids who can go home to do so. He was coincidentally planning to come home this weekend anyway, and is now looking forward to a 3-day (at least) weekend.

So… does anyone have any idea what happens regarding Tuesday? Assuming the storm is over, my student will need Tuesday to travel back to UD, and will therefore miss classes. She’s already worried about this.

udmom, my best guess is that UD will cancel Tuesday’s classes IF the storm track points towards Delaware, as Monday would be the day where travel would be highly discouraged.

My dilemma is that my daughter went to visit a friend at Johns Hopkins last night. She doesn’t know if she should take the train back to Newark on Sunday or have us pick her up in Baltimore and drive her back to Newark once the ‘All Clear’ is given. We’ll play it by ear and err on the side of caution…

Stressedx3, my son refused to come home. He said it would be just as bad in South Jersey, so what was the point. I hate when he’s right. His roommate is going home today.

We wondered, too, if closing only Monday, when would they come back? They would have to close Tuesday for students to get back.

Good luck to everyone in the path of the storm. I just hope we don’t lose power, since we would lose our well water, too.

if you are planning to try to get to UD this weekend be advised that there is likely to be massive traffic jams as Rt. 95 will be closed for construction throughout the whole weekend around Rt.202. Traffic is being diverted to Rt. 495. So be advised.

We are in same boat as stressedx3. DD wondered what the point of coming home was since the situation will be just as bad here (Long Island). Plus when would she be able to get back to UD and how? She has enough friends from Delaware who are staying in the dorm, too - if the situation becomes extended, she can certainly go home with one of them.

She was going to the mall yesterday anyway, so I reminded her to make sure she has a flashlight, extra batteries and water. She’s with a big group in her dorm. I’m sure they will watch out for each other.

Yeah, I think the message to leave is aimed more at in-state students or those close enough that they can get back fairly easily. Given the forecast, I wouldn’t be surprised if classes are cancelled Tuesday as well.

I’m in agreement with many of the above posters… classes will likely be suspended on Tuesday in order to permit travel back to campus. At the minimum, it would be “excused absenses”.

Just talked to my d she is staying(we are to far away to get her) and about half the dorm in Smyth is also staying. She was going out to buy food as they were told that if power is lost the fobs would not work to get into the dorms. The hardest thing for me is that UD has not changed the information since last night. what is thier evacuation plan for to the students that are in the dorms if it comes to that.

D arrived home this afternoon… her boyfriend arrived yesterday as I got the reverse 911 call on my cell and home phone. She called within mintutes and said she’d see what was going on and then decide. With the exception of 4 kids, her floor all decided to return home. I’m guessing Tuesday’s classes will be cancelled as well. My plan is to bring her back early Wednesday morning provided it’s over by then.

Jberger do you mean applications? My d was applying last year during the east coast Ice storm. Her school was closed for 4 days and we had no power for a week. although her apps had been in a few things like teacher recs had not gotten in. It was not an issue due to the widespread issues the schools D applied to all pushed their dates back to Nov 15th. I can’t say the same will happen this year but that’s how it went last year. D applied to 10 schools on the east coast and had no issues. Even the schools down south were very aware of our hardships and were super nice.

not saying it didn’t make it less stressful but it is college apps so it’s stressful no matter what! lol!

My son decided to come home, he said most of the kids on his floor were gone or going home!! Hope he can get back to school at some point but I’m glad he is home safe and sound for now.

Daughter decided to return to campus this morning and ride out the storm from her room in Russell. Central PA is forecast to be right in the path of Sandy, and she figured it would be no better to be here than in her dorm, not to mention the difficulty in getting back to campus after the storm.

Fauster, she’ll have company in Russell, my son says half his floor in Russell A is still there and quite a few on the other floors. They went out yesterday and my son picked up peanut butter, jelly and bread just in case they can’t get to the dining hall. I did read that tomorrow the dining halls are on weekend brunch schedule and Kent dining is closed.

My Russell A son now says there’s 13 on his floor and 10-15 on the other floors, so probably less than 20 in the building would be reality. He said they’re having a weekend camp out in the hallway, too. Apparently they agree with the parents not to sleep in the rooms, especially since his bed is right by the window.

Dining halls will be closed on Monday and Tuesday, Oct. 29-30, and students who have dining plans can pick up packaged food (six meals) for the next two days at dinner service, tonight, Oct. 28 – from 5-7 p.m. in the Rodney Dining Hall, Russell Dining Hall and Pencader Dining Hall. Students should bring bags and refillable bottles.
