hw at ucla

how many hours do you guys have a night? do you have plenty of free time to join groups, experience the LA, make meaningful friendships, etc? or is it almost all devoted to doing work?

Its all up to you. I know people who do nothing, and do well, some that do nothing, and fail. Others study all day and still barely pull C’s, other study all day and pull A’s.

People here do tend to balance their time well however. Personally I think I study more than the average student, and i study about 2 hrs a night on average, and 4-8 before midterms, and maybe 6-10 before finals.

Its always different, but i study a lot with friends so while i am “studying” it isn’t what i would all devoting my full attention to work.

so you think 2 nights of hw is more than average? i’m just trying to compare ucla’s work level to schools like stanford, yale, where some people say the exact opposite: they have only 2 hours of free time and the rest doing hw. :-/

also if you do work for 2 hours a night on average, have you joined groups? go down to westwood? is there a typical way most students spend their free time or does it greatly vary from individual to individual?

It all depends on your schedule. If you take 4 classes as opposed to 3, you will be studying more. If your schedule is consists of difficult classes, you will also be studying more than average.

It also depends on what you are happy with…if you’re willing to settle with Bs, then you will not be studying nearly as much as people that want the As.

^ok, let’s say my courseload was moderately difficult (but not like…pre-med or something) and that i was fine with mostly a’s but some b’s. would you say i’d be working about 2-3 hours a night?

what major??

Some classes give a lot of homework, others are mostly exams or papers. You might have classes every day of the week, or you might have a day or two with almost nothing. There are so many factors that it’s impossible to give a definite answer.

@madeinchina: my major (if i get into it junior year) would be film. if i don’t, probably american studies.

@thiscouldbeheavn: ok, i guess it isn’t definite. it’s just that most of the schools i’ve asked were able to give me an average, but its ok. :)

It’s almost impossible to give an average… at least as I see it, it will depend on your major, self-discipline, “intellectual capacity,” classes you’re taking, etc.
Since your major is film/american studies/humanities, I’m guessing it will be a lot more chill.

film classes don’t have a lot of homework. they’re mostly reading, and occasional papers, which are definitely doable and not overwhelming. science and math classes tend to have more “homework” because they have to do problem sets - most college courses primarily assign reading though over homework.

I spent 4 hours studying/hw a day.

I’m a first year, took a Cluster, easy GE, and 31a.

Honestly, I spent time only for assignments…
Cluster - 2 hrs for midterm, 4 hrs for each paper (2 papers) - Grade = A/A-
Easy GE - 1hr for miderm, 2 hrs for final - Grade = A
31a - 12 hrs for final, 4 hrs for each midterm - Grade = B, I really screwed up on the first midterm due to personal reasons and had to overstudy just to get by… ugh

Honestly, I had so much free time I really didn’t know what to do with myself.

What ge did you take that was so easy you spent a mere one to two hours for midterms and final?

binks09 - Get a hobby.

It varies from student to student and from course to course. I’ve taken classes were it took me the almost the whole weekend to do one homework. While in another it didn’t take me more than four hours to read the chapter and do the homework. I’m speaking of EE classes.

^GrassBandit’s first straight-faced reply in two months

There are people who don’t do jack **** for a class but just sit down and learn all the material the night before a midterm/final and are able to pull it off and get A’s.

Then there are the people who stay up till the wee hours to understand everything as it’s being taught.

Different people learn differently. I’d say during non midterm/final weeks, I spend the bare minimum, say 4 hours a week just to keep track of what’s going on in the classes and when the tests come around, hunker down and learn all of the material a night or two before the test.
