so how is sleep and stress compared to high school?
i burned out in high school b/c i pretty much had no free time after getting home in the evening...
at least class isn't for the whole day..

overall how many hrs/night does an avg ucla student sleep? do u think it varies for each major?

also how difficult is it to resist distractions from hw?

major has something to do with it, but its mostly your own self discipline and attitude. if you are determined to get all A's in every class you'll be more stressed than someone with an "ehh...." attitude.

you can stay up all night studying your brains out, playing computer games, watching tv, watching movies, doing nothing, or you can goto sleep at a reasonable time.

its difficult to resist distractions if you're easily distracted and/or prone to procrastination. if not, then you'll burn through hw and block out everything with ease.

also, any extra curricular activities you do can potentially eat into your free/study/sleep times.

but generally you wont feel drained after classes unless you have back to back to back classes that last for like 6 hours a day or something. usually people only have class maybe 3 hours a day. however you allocate your time before and after is entirely in your hands.

I slept close to ten hours a day spring quarter. It varies though, depending on my mood. It's really up to you - how hard you work, how focused you are when you work. And what grades you're driving for. Plan on using covel tutoring if it's offered for your classes - they will help you a whole lot. Stress-wise, you'll learn to handle your time, or die. :D

the avg ucla student sleeps not so much, especially those freshmen packed in residence hall triples. if i get 7-8 hours ill be happy. last year i got around 5-7 for fall and winter and closer to 8 for spring, and spring was an unusual time where i had no class before 1.

I slept little in HS because I enjoyed torturing myself and engaging in sleep-deprivation. That, and lack of discipline. I slept 8-9hrs/day roughly during the school-year. I "studied"/did-work less than I did in HS since well, a lot of the **** I had to do in HS was *****work.

Likewise. How many units are you taking? 13? 14? Unless you're an art major or have studio classes, that's equivalent to roughly 13-14 hours of class during the week. Divide that by 5.

Yeah, it depends somewhat on major. A chemical engineering major is going to have to study more than Asian American Studies major. (P.S. AA Studies is rumored to have some of the easiest classes at UCLA.) Oh and as a Pre-Med student, you'll naturally be more inclined to be psycho about grades.

also how difficult is it to resist distractions from hw?

What VTEC and Deuces said.

Addendum: Deuces is an engineer too! And he does not suck at school.

i have eng comp 3, math 3a, and ge cluster: LA..however that many units is. how much time/wk spent in a sorority usually? i'm seriously thinking about phi sigma rho, the science/engineering one. if that seriously drains my time i'm not joining, esp if i have other ECs, then homework!

Fiat lux is nothing. Pic10A is about half of CS 31 I think. Phy Sci 5 with Robertson is pure memorization and one of the relatively tougher of the non-SoCampus science GEs I think.

If it's too much I'd drop Phy Sci 5 just b/c it's a GE.

fastMEd are you doubling up in bizecon and pre-med? not to sound nosy..but what's your next quarter classes going to look like because im considering following a similar path but don't know how feasible or realistic it'll be for me. thanks.

It's usually not that much HMWK. Up to you to decide WTH you want to do and if you want to do extra problems. Homework is usually not mandatory and you might have to turn it in for something like 10% of your overall grade. Depends on the professor.

Yes, you will have too much free time. Just don't be a lazy idiot and procrastinate.

etti, i'm not doing biz econ + premed. i was entertaining the thought of double majoring in math applied science and biz econ at first, but i am not sure if two extra years for the math major are worth it.

if i notice that bizecon + a career in business is not for me though, i will switch in a heartbeat to premed.

honestly though, i do not think that bizecon and premed should be that bad.

It would be painful. For one thing, you're going through two separate weeding out procedures and at the same time, using different parts of your brain in addition to dealing with separate forms of competition with ostensibly different motives embedded in the intentions of both the students and professors. It is, at the forefront, admirably ambitious and does, in some sense, suggest a default plan if the situation that you were more talented, hard-working, and inclined towards one of the two disciplines. This is not to suggest the choosing process is Manichean though. ;)
