I already got a MAILED letter from Umich???!!!

I understand that. On their website they say 12-14. When did she apply though? I imagine that as they get backed up later in the year it takes longer per application. Currently they have nothing to do except for the first batch, and 2 weeks is not at all unreasonable for a group of people to go over a group of applications. A month would be understandable also. And besides, we're basing it off of our current empirical evidence. Yes, you're daughter didn't get a response for 10+ weeks, cool. Irrelevant. We're seeing people who applied at relatively the same time as us getting responses. Obviously they are reviewing and finishing applications. So from what's happening you can judge what's going on over there to some extent. Obviously more decisions will be going out. They want mail one now and then none for 2 weeks. Bah.

You are going to be very disappointed if you think your answer is coming soon.

My daughter was in the first batch, applied Sept, and found out mid-Dec. It probably was 12 or 13 weeks just like the school says.

Good luck.. It's a great place to go to school.

At least that gives us another depressing angle to look at things from. It might also be that the "shoe-in" candidates get decisions earlier, but I imagine that's what wait lists and deferrals are for anyway... Maybe it depends on area also. Bah. Being a member of this forum doesn't help my anxiety, haha. But thanks, dstark, I hope I get in.

well, here's the thing. When I called them, they said that NO DECISIONS were made yet. I don't think you guys should be expecting anything soon. After talking to all my friends and talking to my guidance counselor, I'm led to believe that i'm a unique case. Finding out two weeks after sending is ridiculously fast and it was something I sure as hell wasn't expecting. I think the adcom said decisions by christmas break? I'm not too sure.

thanks for the replies. i'm grinding through this year...if I keep my current trend I'll probably have all A's and one or two B+'s with 5 AP classes. I'm crossing my fingers....

They said we would hear back around the 2nd week of november.

Be prepared, possibly, for a long haul, particularly if you're near the borderline. My kids got applications in last year in early October. Many acceptances, by very strong applicants, were posted, but my kids heard nothing. In December, they got a letter appologizing for the delay, and stating that if they hadn't heard after 1st Semester grades came in, send those in. This was one kind of deferral letter. Sometine February or March, I can't recall, they got a true deferral letter. In mid-April, two weeks after kids had heard from private schools, they got wait-listed. There is a good ending, as one got in off the wait list in May and is now a happy freshman. Not everyone goes through this, but be prepared if you are a close call.

Good luck to all.

Hopefully I'm not borderline, but I might be - no extra curriculars really. Stats are fine though, 32 ACT, 3.9 GPA. We'll see.

All cases are individual, but at least based on numbers, borderline for OOS last year was 29 ACT, 3.75 UMich GPA.

Alright, and I'm instate, so... hurray, I guess. I'm learning to be less anxious though.

That's the thing about umich. I've heard some crazy admissions stories. Someone on these boards (hoedown?) told me of a girl, instate, 3.9, 34 ACT that got rejected. Then again I know kids with really low GPA's and test scores that get in. I'm just praying....haha

Jesus, that's scary. Maybe she applied in like January. Man, yeah, praying indeed.

yeah the valedictorian from one of the best high schools in MI (rochester) was rejected by u of m. at least we know they're looking deep into candidates, not just at numbers.

yea well, awheio, I think your in. Cases like that girl I was talking about are VERY rare. Only sometimes you hear of kids like that get rejected because umich thinks that the they are a safety for overqualified applicants and that the applicant will probably NOT end up going to umich, if you get what i'm saying.

Do you think all A's and two B+'s is good? I'm aiming for a 4.0 but to play it safe, I think (barring any other ridiculous circumstances) I can pull off all a's and two B+'s. (I take all AP's). Hauckt/ccrunner, if you don't mind me asking, what were your senior grades? Do I HAVE to pull a 4.0 to get in?

I had all A's and 1 B with 5 AP's for my first semester and I was still waitlisted. But I got in.

All A's and 1 B+ with 2 AP's

you know i think that only happens when the person in question submits it really late, or doesn't have a complete app for awhile.

i have dual legacy, how much does that help? (dad for masters and grandpa for pharm.d and pathology, plus he worked there for 20 years, but i wasn't able to put that in the app anywhere so i suppose that is a moot point)

Legacy helps but not as much as before. I remember a couple years ago, everyone at my HS that had a legacy seemed to get in, but in these past few years I know legacy kids that got rejected. It seems to me like legacy is just a "boost;" it isn't a "hook" as some people think.

Hauckt/ccrunner: At my school, all A's and two B+'s (in AP classes) is a 3.95. Of course, I'm aiming for a 4.0 but for a 3.3 kid to suddenly jump to a 4.0....I wan't to play it safe and say that I'll get all A's and two B+'s. Do you think this is good enough?
