I am a Tulane Junior, Tour Guide, and Admissions Intern. Ask away.

Hi Y'all,

My name's Owen. I am a junior at Tulane who is very involved with the admissions office. I started off by giving tours, and now I am a social media intern, blogger, and admissions intern. If you have any questions, I'll do my best to answer truthfully and in a timely manner.

My son has emailed the Admissions person for our area and hasn’t received a response. He emailed in late August. Is this normal?

Tulane is his #1 choice, applying SCEA. He’s currently studying abroad in France and trying to get all of his application work done from there. He’s working on his app and wants to set up a time to Skype with his Admissions counselor.

Thoughts? Should he just keep emailing her until he receives a response?

Hi, Owen. Thanks for offering your help! My DS has applied EA (I doubt transcript has been sent from the HS yet; probably within the next week). GC will include her rec and teachers recs with transcript.

We are going to a local admissions talk from Tulane next week. I’m sure DS will follow up with an email to the admissions person we meet there. Do you think it would be of any benefit to also get a nice recommendation from the town official who oversees the community service project he has been involved with for the past two years (and is involved with again this year) and send that along too? Or is that overkill and not necessary?

From what I’ve learned on these boards, Tulane is a match for him and (dare I say) some have suggested he will be a great candidate for merit aid. But I want him to do whatever he can to help his cause.

What do you think?

Hi Exeter,

We actually have three new counselors, that were hired this summer to replace ones that have left. It is possible that your son has an outdated email address, or his counselor has left. Where is his high school?

Hi Linymom,

Yes, that sounds like a great person to get a rec from. We allow up to two additional recommendations, after one’s counselor recommendation. Your son sounds like he may want to apply for the Community Service Scholarship!

Hi Owen,

My son is also applying to Tulane EA (1st choice and considered target). Can you tell us more about the Community Service Scholarship? He belongs to Habitat for Humanity here in NY and would love to continue the work in NOLA. He also did his own fundraising effort for Katrina victims (at 10 years old, raising over $7500 by himself) which he wrote about as part of his “Why Tulane?” application. He has other Community Service activities mostly related to science and the environment.

I would love to know more about this scholarship opportunity!

A Tulane admissions counselor is coming to his school in October and he’s already signed up for the session.

Thanks for any info you can share!

Hi Owen

Adding onto mavitale’s question, I mentioned in another thread that the page for the CSS now says the scholarship can as much as full tuition. In the past it maxed out at $15,000. Can you find out what the correct info is? Thanks.

Hi Owen,
I recently applied to Tulane using the free online application offered to me. I place in the top 25% of Sat scores for Tulane and have a 3.89 Gpa from a top private high school. I wrote a personal statement, however I left the optional why Tulane essay blank. I felt it was better to leave it blank than waste my time and admissions time by writing a bs essay about a school I’ve never visited. What I’m wondering is if this decision will affect my application and chances of acceptance to Tulane?

Just looked at the CSS app and it still says max $15,000. So Owen, if that is right you may want to have them correct this page: [Tulane University - Tulane Community Service Scholarship](http://tulane.edu/financialaid/grants/css.cfm) It is the very first line.

rugbyfield - Even though you never visited, there is tons of information on the Tulane website, as well as YouTube videos and other ways to find out a lot about the school. A major point of the essay is to separate those applying just to see if they get in versus those that really want to be there. Obviously not everyone can visit, but many people attend local events, know people that have gone there, or just do research. After all, even if you got into Tulane, why would you go if you know nothing about it? So yes, not doing the Why Tulane (or doing a very superficial one) affects your chances. Last year, many people with very high stats got wait listed (and so did not get in since none were taken off the wait list) because they did not demonstrate any real interest in Tulane.

Owen, do you agree?

That may be. His school is in New Hampshire and his permanent residence is in Maine.

Hi Owen! I just want to thank for doing this, it is greatly appreciated by all of us here on CC. I’d just like to get your opinion on something; I’m not sure if it’s a big deal or not, or how it would affect my chances. I submitted Part 1 of my application several weeks ago under the SCEA plan. I was confident in this decision at the time because I love Tulane (and still do!) but now I’m realizing that SCEA might not be the best plan for me. Tulane is still one of my tippy-top choices, so I don’t want to do anything that will negatively impact my chance of admission, but will switching my app to EA be a bad idea? I won’t go into detail about why, but I just think that would be the best application method for me and I failed to see that initially. Again, I’ve only submitted part 1 of the app (not part 2 or my transcript/rec letters or anything else) so I’m not sure if that makes it any easier or better? Do people often switch their applications from one plan to another? Okay, I’m rambling at this point… I’d just GREATLY appreciate your input on my situation, especially with your involvement in admissions! Thank you so much!

Hey y’all,

I’ll try to answer everything, sorry for the delay!

FallenChemist, you’re the man- or lady. I think they worded the CSS that way because it can be combined with other scholarships, but the CSS itself maxes out at $15k.

mavitale, your son sounds like he should definitely apply for the CSS! The application and more info can be found here: [Tulane Admission: Merit Scholarships](http://admission.tulane.edu/aid/merit.php)

rugbyfield, I wouldn’t worry too much. Yes, the “Why Tulane?” essay expresses interest, but if you are an extremely qualified applicant it won’t matter too much. Fallenchemist is right again, to a degree. Every school wants to admit kids that actually WANT to come to their school. As I said, don’t worry about it, it’s not the end of the world.

rw2013, We get this a lot. Switching from SCEA to EA is not that big a deal. If you were switching to RD, that would be a different story. Tulane (like many schools) admits a majority of its class in the first wave. Since you are still applying early, I wouldn’t worry at all.

I think that was all of them! If any of you are going to the Boston reception tomorrow in Newton, I’ll see you there!

Roll wave!
Owen

Hey Owen. Are you going to be at the admissions event on Long Island next Wed?

Thank you so much! That’s incredibly reassuring. Despite others’ advice, I was really nervous and antsy about it, so that’s great to hear.

Son emailed again and received a speedy response this time! I think his first email got lost in hurricane madness.

Does anyone know if you can submit November SAT scores for an EA application?

Owen,
Tell us more about the new Paul Tulane full tuition scholarship. What kind of student would be the target candidate for that scholarship?

Hi Owen.

We seem to have a bit of an information gap occurring. What I heard at the Boston session was that only the SAT was superscored. Apparently at one of the New York area sessions it was stated that the ACT is now superscored as well. Can you please let us know which of these is correct?

Thanks

Owen, Yes, please clarify above ^ (I’m the one who heard the ACT super-score info at the Tulane event this week.)

Also, I forgot to ask at the info session: Does admissions look at the SATIIs at all? I know they are not required, but if sending excellent scores, will they be considered in admissions/merit aid? (We’ve already sent them, just wondering if they will help at all.)

Thanks!

Glad to here it ExeterMama. Sorry I missed that last post of yours. And LinyMom, I won’t be.
