I am an an honor student with an "F". Can I still get into a good university?

I have been an "A" student for just about my whole life. I literally have all A's except for one A-. Anyway, I have been taking plenty of college classes during high school, and one of my professors gave me an F! So now I have an F that is completely surrounded by a bunch of A's. Now my question is: can i still get into a good college? I have plenty of extracurricular activities, community service hours, and I have fairly decent SAT and ACT scores. I really want to get into a good school (I am even going to apply to some ivy league schools). However, will this one F completely ruin me? I am fine with not getting accepted into an ivy league school, but I still want to go to a really good school. Do I still stand a chance?

Is the F in a course that you need to graduate?
can you withhold it?

well it seems like most places you would have been aware of the situation and could have dropped out of the class. you have a chance at some selective schools, but i don’t know if the ivy league is going to be ok with an F. you’d have to have a really good reason, or some really strong ecs to make up for that. i think you have a shot as long as you pick the schools you apply to carefully and explain the circumstances in your “additional information” section of the app. don’t worry too much about it!

What year are you in? What is the class? What do you define as a good university? Basically, you will be eliminated from consideration from any college that has plenty of students of your caliber/test scores that don’t have that kind of blotch on their records. Why should they let it go when they need to eliminate kids with so many qualified applicants? Unless you have some really outstanding hook they want, yes, it gives them a quick way to bring down the number of applicants to have to consider.

Try to explain the F. I assume that F didn’t happen because you were lazy or anything because you have tons of A’s. If you don’t explain it somehow somewhere when applying I’m sorry but Ivy’s will not look at an F and accept you. At that caliber, F is just not going to cut it.

For me, attaching a two-page essay (in addition to the rest of the app) on why the low grade occurred, why they should still accept you, and why it will never happen again, got me into my colleges.

^ that’s a really good idea. I’m going to steal that and hopefully do it successfully. With any luck I’ll be able to explain myself.

Bump

Without any explanation on here for your F, you still have a chance anywhere. There are no cut and dry rules. In fact, you can use the F as a learning lesson and show how you’ve grown from such a failure. It’s all dependent on who you are. Does that F define you?

I don’t think 1 bad grade necessarily sinks you, but it might raise the suspicion that perhaps you’d been caught cheating or something, so an explanation might be a good idea.

You need to explain it or have your high school guidance counselor explain it for you in the rec or a supplemental letter. talk to your counselor!
