Would you mind pming me one of your essays. I'm interested in seeing how you come off in them.

I didn't realize I would get some much negative feed back.

To be honest, what did you expect? Any thread on affirmative action, which this thread will turn out to be, will get negative responses. Many of the people here haven't been accepted to college(s) yet, so their responses are understandable. That said, I don't think AA is a bad thing. If you're qualified you'll get in anyway- nobody will "steal your spot." For that matter, almost all of the minorities that get accepted to top colleges have worked hard and deserve their acceptances! The minority applicant pool is a lot more competitive than people think, IMO.

To get back to the original post, I think HYP are unlikely. Possible, but unlikely. Dartmouth and U Penn would be probably be better reaches, and Brown, Cornell, and Columbia would be slight reaches.

this isnt even about diversity...this is about someone who is taking advantage of the system and who is using a very very very major technicality to his advantage. This student should NOT be given the opportunties AA allows for.

Doogie is right, this is not about diversity. I don't think people are against AA when it truly helps people who NEED it, but this guy...he had said earlier in his 1st post that he did not consider himself black until he realized the boost (the alleged boost) he would get. He got that part edited out and that is why people are ticked. It may look like people are randomly attacking him b/c he is black (so he says) and that he will get in b/c of his race, but that is just not the case. People are pointing out the fact that he is exploiting it...pure and simple. He feels that being black will get him into college. He also said that he created his club after his little revelation of finding his "blackness".

Excuuse me. Don't event to make threats on the rest of this. Someone should report YOU to the colleges.

"i think all black ppl suffer at least a little from discrimination. i have enough to write an essay about it."

"you have ENOUGH to write an essay about it." YOU COULD WRITE A WHOLE FREAKING ENCYLOPEDIA FROM A to Z ABOUT BLACK DISCRIMINATION. That shows how little you know of your own blackness. "AT LEAST A LITTLE" JESUS CHRIST

^
True. Considering it's Black History month, the OP should have plenty of material to use.

i hate this crap.

too many people take advantage of the fact that they are of a certain skin color/country when they clearly do not deserve that status.

Man, who knew what I initially said would spark this.

wow. I am sorry that I ticked some of you off. I don't even really know why. my guess is that if all of you were in my situtation, you'd be doing the same thing. :) :) :) =)

You are going overboard. If you need to use it to your advantage all you had to do was on the applications state that you are black. You dont need to parade around saying that your black just to get into college and then forget about it afterward. This is ridiculous and as 100% black man I am offended that a someone who is just 1/4th black wants all of sudden parade himself around claiming he has faced discrimination.

dargh. There's not a clear cut black and white, remember the shades of gray. I personally think that everything that will be said has been said.

EDIT: I just realized that I made a huge pun, please pardon it.

There is no difference between 100% black and 25+% black. blackness isn't define by percentages. if you are 1% black you can still be black. :)
:)

By that same logic, you should be white since you're 75 percent white.

I'm in that same situation and I didn't take advantage of the system. That's why people have morals. People don't have morals just for the sake of it. Their purpose is for situations like these where they can be tested and put into practice. You knew what you were doing and I'm sure deep down inside you knew there was just something that wasn't right. But clearly that doesn't matter to you. You're just sorry that you "ticked some of us off." That fact is, you still aren't sorry for what you did it.

At least I can look at myself in the mirror and see an honest person.

According to NorthStarMom, you can only have one drop of black blood in you and still call yourself black.
her exact quote:

I know plenty of people who look white --even have blond hair, blue eyes, thin noses, etc. -- who consider themselves black because they had black ancestors. Indeed, in many parts of the US, a person with "one drop" of black blood was considered African American no matter how white they looked, and was expected to follow the Jim Crow laws.

:)
:)

Notice that that's in past tense.

On top of that:

1) You're not subject to discrimination by blackness if you don't look black
2) You don't find a large percentage of white folks with black ancestries in ghettoes, at least not like in my state.

A black person defining themself according to Jim Crow laws. The hilarity of this is astonishing.

not the i know part. :)

I know plenty of people who look white --even have blond hair, blue eyes, thin noses, etc. -- who consider themselves black because they had black ancestors. Indeed, in many parts of the US, a person with "one drop" of black BLOOD WAS (WAS WAS) CONSIDERED African American no matter how white they looked, and WAS EXPECTED to follow the Jim Crow laws.
