Maybe you should call the admissions office and see what the time line is, since you have this the housing thing to worry about. Also for the housing thing at the other school, is there a way to get a refund (even if there is a fee) if you change your mind.

I wouldn't give up. There is always a chance and maybe they thought he would be going to an ivy or top private with those scores, so they decided not to get a spot. If they now see interest.......you never know?!?!

My son's appeal did not go through either. Don't feel bad Yankee Boy! He had a 1300, taken MANY AP courses, 3.8, all star bball player, nearly 500 community service hours (Not exaggerated as some do). He will go to his back up school into their Honors College. Just wasn't enough for UF. I am convinced more than ever of one thing. If you are male, white, and Christian your chances of getting in are very slim. Unless of course you are willing to stroke a very nice check to the school.
I heard a VERY interesting story today from a very reliable source. This gentleman has first hand knowledge of a student who applied to UF. He had 1190 SAT, no AP courses and a 3.3 GPA. He checked the box for African American, not white (which he is). HE GOT IN! ACCEPTED! Now someone explain that one! I would never advocate anyone lying. In fact I 'd rather be honest and not get in. But , I am deeply troubled by this information.

Thank you, orchid , for your kind thoughts. I am very happy for you that your son got in. To tell you the truth, it's nice to hear someone got in! Can you give some general stats about your son?

BBallmom and Yankee Boy, I'm sorry that your appeals didn't work. BBallmom, you asked about my son's stats -- here is what was submitted for ED, followed by the new info we sent for his appeal:

ED stats: Gpa UW 3.65, W 4.45, UF weighted 3.83 (this was the transcript with errors)
SAT 1390
9 AP classes, including chem, bio, physics, calc, and others
He only submitted 76 of his community service hours in that first go-round -- he actually thought the rest didn't matter, beyond the bright futures requirements.

He was rejected based on these qualifications

For his appeal, he had an updated SAT score -- 1420, plus corrected transcripts.
GPA UW 3.7, W 4.5, UF weighted 3.95
He also submitted the rest of his volunteer hours and explained some more of his ECs -- his volunteer hours were more than double the first go-round.

He also got accepted to Georgia Tech, FSU (with an invite to the honors college) and NC State (where he was in the top 10% of admitted students, and also invited to honors).

Where will you end up going now, Yankee Boy and BBallmom's son?

Orchid, your son has great stats :) My son took 7 aps, all that were available at his school (inc. calc, physics, bio, etc) and the 3.8 was UF's weighted GPA. I would be happy to share with you privately about where he is going. Please email me. Just not sure I want to post it publicly.
Bala, I'm not sure what you mean about "admission to a gifted school". Do you mean your son is gifted? Did he already apply and he's been denied? I will be happy to help if I can. Just need more information.

haha omg! he lied. Well what really frustrated me was that many unqualified people got in because they picked the african American Box...i mean how does somone with a 3.2 gpa get in and a person with almost a 5.0 not? its seriously crazy....

Actually, we wouldn't lose a lot of money if he were to get accepted to UF after he pays the housing contract etc...

Partly fatigue with the whole process and wanting it to be over with and decision DONE, and partly because there are actually several benefits to his safety school that I have felt all along, I probably won't push him to do the appeal. I'll support him if he does it, and if it's successful I'll eat the $$ sent to the other school, but the window is closing fast, and it has to be his decision, and his action.

For those who did an appeal, other than new info, (medical, test scores, grades, etc.) was there anything else you included? More details about leadership roles in the EC's that you might not have made clear the first time around, that sort of thing?

As my ID states, I am mom2three. This is #2. In two years we do it all again... sigh. But that will be the last time. Whew!

It would be a bad thing to lie. I don't recommend it! Visit the thread on essays for help -- there are many, many discussions of college essays of various types. Good luck!

Not that I am assuming anyone specific would lie -- just that it would be a bad idea in general. . . another form of cheating to get ahead. Coffeecrazy, I would be frustrated too, under the circumstances. It is hard enough to compete to get into a good school, without worrying about other people actually lying to get ahead. Sigh.
