I am not athletic at all but I want to do a sport.

I just started High School, and realized that I'm the only one of my friends who doesn't play a sport. I have never played any HS sport in my life, and am a really slow runner (my fastest mile run in gym class was like 10 minutes :P). The only team sports I have played are pee wee soccer when I was in preschool and neighborhood tennis in 2nd grade. I played golf in 6th-7th grade, but I remember that being mental torture, and never want to go back to that ever again. I'm terrible at football/soccer, as I do not know any of the terminology of those sports. What would be a great beginner sport to pick up? From what I hear XC and Field are supposed to be pretty good...

Bowling

Swimming

Lacrosse

Track for sure. At my school swimming is hard to get on :/

You could have been my son 4 years ago, except now he’s been a varsity lettered runner and tennis player. He Started high school over-weight and had your feelings. He started with tennis. Our school had a lousy tennis team, so he made the team. He never made varsity, but played for JV for two years. Then Sophomore year joined the XC team. EVERYONE is welcome there at most schools. Maybe you will never be varsity, but you will be part of a team, and I know my son has loved it and lost so much weight and is now a tall, confident, lean running machine. He is NOT the top runner, but who cares! He loved it and as he enters senior year, would probably agree it’s one of the best things he did. Not everyone is a varsity athlete, but when you join a team, its still fun being JV.

Thanks for the recommendations guys, I really appreciate it. I find track to be really boring, across Country sounds pretty cool though. I might pick up tennis again, but honestly I’m not so sure about that.

*cross country

Lol haha

Cross and track. By joining, you become athletic as you continue to improve, and the coaches in sports like cross and track, I’ve found, to be very supportive of their teams.

As a former runner for 2 years, anyone can honestly pick up Cross Country and Track & Field anytime, it just takes a lot of commitment and time. What I love about this sport is that it shows the people who actually put commitment to it by the performances in the races, it really shows.

Its overall a great sport, but if you don’t like running, obviously I advise to not join XC/Track, honestly. If you choose this sport and you’re one of the outliers of runners (in a bad way) do not worry, you’ll just be a freshman, I would expect any entering freshman to have an equivalent chance of making varsity (unless if they started earlier). But yeah, I only don’t advise of taking this sport if (1 You do not like running, you have to at least have respect for it. (2 You need to cooperate with the length of practices, if you just want to go home right away, get it done with, or have a difficult/busy life, don’t take it, honestly. (3 You don’t like socializing, this sport will be difficult to deal with if you’re a loner on the team.

Run, run, run - that’s all it is. Other sports I recommend (taking from my secondary school); Football, Golf, Surf, Wrestling, Badminton, Swimming - are all sports that usually don’t require previous training, Swim and Surf only if you experienced it before, if you don’t know how to do it then don’t join.

Tennis, Volleyball, Water Polo, Baseball - are all sports that you might be able to join without previous training, these sports do have some people that have previous training.

The rest, don’t join unless if you had been on a club or played for your middle school.
