Outside of school sports?

Hey there, CC. I'm kind of newb with the whole athletics thing, but I'd thought I'd ask some of you brilliant CC people for advice on something that I've been thinking about for a while.

So I've always enjoyed running, and was actually going to join the school's track team in middle school, but I moved, so that wasn't really possible. I also played tennis as kind of a "for fun" thing for my old middle school, and was planning to try out for the team in high school, however, like I said before, I moved. So that didn't really happen.

I'm currently a sophomore, and I've been thinking a lot about how much I enjoyed running and playing tennis. I was considering trying out for the teams now, in high school,, just to see if I could perhaps make my school's team even at a JV level. However, the problem is, I'm not really amazing at either of these two sports. I have the ambition to do it, if I set my mind to it. Though, even if I were to make the school teams (for either sport, I'm not ruling anything out) after a summer of hard training, athletics classes at my school are double blocked, and so instead of taking 8 classes, I would be only taking 6. Which is something that I definitely don't want to do, because it'll conflict with other classes I need to take (very complicated, even I don't fully understand how/why). =P

SO, basically, I was wondering: are there any out of school programs for track or tennis? I've heard of a league for tennis, although that requires a lot more skill than track does, and seeing that I don't really have the skill right now, I think it would be more difficult for me to learn to be a good tennis player. So track is really what I'd be looking into. But I haven't heard of many competitive teams or clubs outside of school I could be part of... Is anybody here part of one?

Any advice/thoughts/comments are appreciated!

Thanks so much everyone! <3

It’ll depend heavily on where you live; a larger city will likely have more sports clubs than a smaller town. I think you’ll be more likely to find a tennis league than a track program, although you may find a club for whatever event you would like to do.

I do live in a larger area, and I’ve tried Googling some things, but haven’t found much. Do you happen to know of any general, kind of national track programs that perhaps have branches or something in different cities? [Like YMCA kind of thing.]

There are track/running clubs in many different areas. Regardless of if there are any in your area, you can always compete in USTAF meets for cross country and summer track/field. I went to some USTAF track meets last summer (I missed my track season due to stress fractures, so I wanted to race haha). I listed it as summer track on my applications. It was pretty fun.
