I am 17 years old and I want to go to college out of state. My mom doesn’t want to let me go an us basically forcing me to stay in state. Can she stop me from getting the college education I want? She says that she needs to sign for me to go and she said she isn’t going to sign. Somebody please help tell me what I can do! I really really don’t want today in my house we are having issues for months now that I can’t stand living in. Please!
Is she paying for your education? If so, I guess she has the final word. Is there another adult you trust whom you could speak to? Maybe he or she could sit down with you and your mom to help you talk things over. What are your mom’s objections to your going out of state?
Your mom does NOT need to sign anything. She does need to pay for it, though, unless you get a full scholarship. You can’t even take out many loans without a cosigner, just the federal amounts of $5000 or so per year.
If your mom thinks she has to sign off on your college choice, though, she clearly knows nothing about college. So just tell her that by law every student has a right to go to the college of their choice and parents can be prosecuted if they refuse to pay what they can afford. Get a lawyer friend or some other authoritative person to back you up.
If you’re too upstanding to do this (or your mom’s not that gullible), you’ll have to make sure you get a merit scholarship that will cover the price of your tuition. There is a thread on here that lists automatic merit scholarships. I don’t know what the exact link is, though.
LOL, mmmgirl, at first I thought you were serious in the second paragraph!
