Hello All,
Sorry, I think my topic should be in a different forum but I could not find the correct one. Anyways, I literally can not decide on two colleges, San Diego State or Cal Poly Slo. First off, I am not positive on what I want to study, I either want to pursue Finance/Accounting or Industrial Engineering. So, having a college that I can switch majors is very critical for me.This scares me for Slo because I heard it was impossible to switch majors. I currently live about 20ish minutes away from San Diego State so that is a big factor because I can save tons of money by living at home. I love the San Diego area and actually would love to live here the rest of my life. I also have tons of good friends who are probably going to attend SDSU. It seems like the large infrastructure of businesses in SD would allow me to find a job much easier than at SLO. I also love the city of SLO, such a great college town with great character. All of the schools programs seem top class with very reputable status. Although if I go to SLO, i’m obviously going to be forced to pay for the dorms. Also I heard that switching majors is very tough and almost impossible. I also forgot to mention that either school I go to, my parents have the ability to pay for but if I choose SDSU, they will help me invest the money I saved from rent for my future. In conclusion, I love SDSU and the whole experience it offers but SLO seems like a fantastic opportunity. What should I do? Should I go to SDSU and save the money or attend SLO? I CANT DECIDE!!!
PS. sorry for poor grammar, I typed this up very quickly. lol.
Thanks again!
Sounds like you’ve answered your own question multiple times throughout the post. SDSU
- Study industrial engineering, it’s crucial to actually have a real thought-after skill. With an engineering degree (which is pretty much the most prestigious one on undergrad level), you can go anywhere.
- I’d go with SDSU if I were you, though I’m interested to see what others think, because SLO does have higher rankings… But I think the saving extra money for future, easy employment in San Diego and just being comfortable there far outweighs the difference in unis’ reputation.
Thanks so much for your responses. dudefromeurope, Yes, I was basically seeing if Cal Poly’s reputation and prestige was “worth the extra money”…
SLO is the better school - comparable to some UCs, as you know.
Generally speaking, it’s hard to switch majors, but not if you go from a very impacted major (engineering) to a less impacted major (business).
Finally, research has shows that living in the dorms results in greater involvement, better grades, and an overall better experience.
Those are the points in favor of Cal Poly SLO.
Have you visited? Spent an overnight there?
If not, do so.
Afterwards, revisit your idea: if you’re still in favor of SDSU, would you be able to live in the dorms your first year, in order to grow and benefit from living on campus?
After visiting and spending time on both campuses, listen to your instinct and follow it, but only after you’ve tested both equally.
