i cant' decide...

Keylyme: thanks for the information  I’m very relieved that we can go to NMH! yay ;D
So everything is dry including the roads right? Well im going to fly to the US this tuesday and will be goin to nmh from newyork…
Do you think that is ok in terms of the roads?

Also, do you know how many students are accepted in each grade in the new 2010 school year? And how many is waitlised?
I’ve been trying to find this info for soo long on the website but it does not say so…

I’m revisiting Tabor Tuesday. Will I see you there, ladyluck?

Ohh well my baad for dissing NMHs budget.

Sorry, ladyluck, I can’t tell you anything about the roads coming up from LaGuardia or JFK. I don’t think bad though, because we didn’t hear anything like that from son’s roommate (who has actually gone home for the w/a and lives outside of NYC.

I only know that they accept around 100 freshmen; not quite sure on the other grades. Total school population is 650-675 (the are aiming for 650, but overenrolled last year) including post grads, so they do add each year - maybe 25-30?

i heard nmh is a feeder to alot of small liberal arts colleges. it has also been called a “trinity college ct” feeder

have you discussed this with your parents? that might be the first and best idea, before coming on here and asking people you don’t know to help you make a life changing decision :)

lemmings…NMH does send a lot of kids to LAC’s, particularly NESCAC’s. I would not say they are necessarily a “feeder” to Trinity. I’ve known of a few kids who have gone, have not seen any Trinity admits yet this year. So far: HYP, Cornell, Columbia, UPenn, Stanford, MIT, JHU, BC, BU Georgetown, UCLA, USC, UCSD, UCBerkeley, Duke, George Washington, U Michigan, Purdue, Northeastern, Northwestern, NYU, Tulane, American, Rice, Penn State, Connecticut College, Williams, Amherst, Tufts, Wheaton, Colby, Babson, Bard, Carleton, Case Western, Kenyon, Wooster, Skidmore, Emory, Wellesley, Wesleyan, Hobart, Oberlein, Olin, Grinnell, Drexel, St. Lawrence…and the list goes on.

bamagirl: i’m visiting on April 9, one day before my decision day :S because i’m still in asia… traveling tommorow… are you sure your going to be able to go to tabor? I heard that the area there is flooded… well, tell me how it goes when you come backk! :)

keylyme: is it going to be ok if i ask my admission officer once i visit? or is it rude…

ilovethattree: my parents told me its my decision and they don’t help me decide. so i’m basically on my own.

Then go with your gut. We’re not helping our daughter decide either, because it’s important when she’s on campus for her to know she is there without pressure from us.

I went to Exeter sight unseen - we didn’t have travel funds for me to do visits or revisit days. But I loved it most days and on those days I didn’t love it - I still knew I’d made the decision to be there. Haven’t regretted going.

You got into great schools. No matter which one you choose, I doubt you’ll make a bad decision.

If worse comes to worse - take a leap of faith and pick the one that stands out most to you. The pursue it with passion! Good luck.

My daughter is in the middle of making a decision so I feel your pain.

exiemitalum: i’m just trying to gather more information and opinions from other people…

the enrollment decision is on april 10 :S
i dont even know where i’m going to go…

I really like Tabor but I don’t know much about the other two. If you like marine biology I would definitely choose Tabor. It felt like it had a more relaxed atmosphere than the other schools I visited. I was accepted but waitlisted for FA so I can’t go.

Keylyme, where did you get that list?

swis - college acceptances.

My daughter got into NMH, Lawrenceville, and Mercersburg and I am almost sure she is choosing NMH. This is extremely hard for her since L’Ville is only 1 hour from home and she will be able to stay involved with some of her ec’s at home. Over the last couple of days and much soul searching she verbalized her love for NMH. From the minute we turned on campus for our interview back in Nov my daughter was done with her boarding school seaches. She loved the campus, the students, the coaches, admissions, and the food! NMH is 4 hours and 20 minutes from home but she wanted the true boarding school experience and I am hoping she is going to be truely happy for the next 4 years. My daughter is a 3 sport athlete and I never miss any games at all. I am going to be in withdrawals not being there all of the time. My daughter interviewed at 8 schools, applied to 6 and got into 5 and revisited 2. I was so sure on the revisit days that her choice would be cut and dry and it wasn’t at all! She loved NMH and really liked L’Ville a lot. She would go to L’Ville in a heartbeat but would be doing it more for me than for herself. This has been the hardest week of her life. People are commenting on that this choice should be a no brainer but I feel that they are both great schools and NMH just feel like a better fit for her. Am I crazy??

No. You are not crazy at all. You sound like a wonderfully supportive parent. Honestly some people on CC get all wrapped up in prestige. You should be happy that your daughter found a school that she is in love with and is going to be very happy at. Fit is a very important thing. Would you rather her be at a school that may be considered more “prestigious” and possibly unhappy or at a school that isn’t so “prestigious” but is very happy and excelling.

I’m not saying she wouldn’t excel at L’ville, but I think NMH is the place for her. You said it yourself.

No you are surely not crazy, said sweetly by another parent. Your daughter has wonderful choices. I totally understand that this week has been crazy with stress, we had our stress last week during our revisits.

There will be such a calm come over you when the decision has been made. And count your blessings. We are in Chicago, and for the last 11 years I nearly missed no dance practices, I know withdrawal.

Keep in mind that the visits might only happen weekends not during the week but you can still visit. Plus, check out the time frame between the first day they get to campus until after Christmas break, you only go at most 4 weeks between breaks/parent weekend–i am hoping it goes quickly

Best Wishes, from a parent in the same boat.

Thank you all for your kindness…it’s making it so much easier. I am so fine regarding my daughter going away. This is all of her doing and I am so proud of her accomplishments and her drive to get into all of these schools. I am also proud of her thought out process on deciding on a school. She knew what she wanted right from the beginning and she isn’t a follower nor do the big names persuade her in anyway. I was given word yesterday by the basketball coach that he will figure out how to electronically send me the game tapes immediately after the game!!

Izientek: did you guys visit mercersburg? did you like it?
is your daughter going to attend nmh next year?
I am at greenfield however, i find that transportation is very hard.
19 hours of plane ride from Asia then 4 more hours of car ride…

ladyluck…There are three major airports within two hours of NMH - Bradley International in CT is about 1 hr., Manchester Regional in NH is about 1 1/2 hr. and Logan in Boston is around 2 hrs.

I think your daughter will be best off to go where her heart takes her. My daughter is in the same position and she is choosing her school based on fit. That is where she will be happiest. Plus, she can’t blame you if it turns out she doesn’t like it. But NMH is a great school! All the best!
