I did the fafsa application beginning of January, and when I listed the schools I wanted to go to, I didn't realize that they only show you the results for my top 3 choices. I got the award detail more than a week ago and I ended up with cal states as my top three, but I really need UCLA on the top spot. I updated my fafsa a couple days ago to update my parents income to this year's info and I also switched the order of my colleges, placing UCLA as my top choice.

My question is will cal grant automatically update my college choices and let me know about UCLA or do I have to contact them know so they can correct it?

@liveonboca
if Ucla was already in my 10 school choices for fafsa, do they already have my information? or will I have to wait again to hear from them about how much I’m going to be awarded?

You just need to have a UC in the first/top slot so that you have the $12xxx awarded. I had Cal Poly SLO in the first slot due to alphabetization on the FAFSA, but Cal Grant showed $5xxx awarded. Another post here on CC said have a UC first so you are awarded the most. I changed my son’s school to UCI as the school he is attending this morning (note: he has not been admitted) and immediately the award changed to $12xxx Cal Grant A awarded.

I would go to the link I posted and change your school to a UC from a CSU to get the most awarded before the deadline on March 3rd or so. If you go to a CSU in the end, you can change it and it will revert back to the lower tuition amount.

The cal grant change is not working for a new freshman for 2014:

Search By Academic Year = 2014-2015 <go></go>

If clicking on <g> It says:
School Changes or Leave of Absence requests can only be made when your Cal Grant has been renewed. In the meantime, you have the option of submitting a school change or housing status change request by clicking the “Future School/Housing Change” link above. If you have any further questions, please contact the Customer Relations Branch at 1-888-224-7268 or via email by clicking the “Contact Us” link below.</g>

It then says:
Access to request a school and/or housing change on this screen is for students who will be renewing an existing Cal Grant award from a prior year only.

The simulator of course works, but how useful is that?

Can only change school after removing the hold, which is graduation.
Only then can change school, which would be after the school decision is made.

They said not to worry because June is not too late to change the school. It does not matter that the schools on there have a lower grant amount than what the eventual school will have. The 3 colleges shown are just examples.

We listed the wrong school & I have been getting the same messages that you were. I thought I was doing something wrong. My daughter is a cc transfer student but didn’t have a previous cal grant. Thank you for the
Helpful post!

It’s say You cannot request a future school change at this time. This screen will be available again before next fall term.

Click here to go to the Cal Grant Main Menu.

However though, on the message they sent me on my email address. It said the deadline for me to fix everything is August 1 2014. Guess I’ll have to call them.
