I Chose UNC Over_________

Self explanatory

UVA (as an Echols Scholar), William and Mary (as a Monroe Scholar), and Davidson :]

But I didn’t get into the honors program at Carolina, haha…

Yale (full financial aid), Dartmouth, Williams (Tyng Scholar), UF.

…not going to even bother saying after the above comment lol

Yeah, wow, sorry. I just realized how cocky I sounded.

^ Did you get any scholarship/honors program at UNC?

Dante, yeah, I’m a Morehead and will be in the honors program.

It’s funny about Morehead & Robertson scholars–they’ll NEVER EVER freely mention it to you…you just have to find out they have those fabulous scholarships through your own sneaky deduction skills haha.

I remember I realized the guy next to me in one of my FYS was a Robertson and he got SO embarassed when I asked him about it…adorable

Northwestern, Johns Hopkins, WF, UMich, Case Western

Leah, haha. The first thing our hosts told us on finalist weekend was to never mention that we were morehead finalists, and not to refer to our hosts as moreheads in front of their friends. Most of their roommates don’t even know they are moreheads. And they (or we, in a few months!) call each other cousins. Also, the Morehead '13 facebook group is visible only to us. It’s pretty funny, actually.

Just don’t go overboard and say ‘cousin’ all the time. I think this is something just particular to the moreheads in my class, but they didn’t really follow that policy of being on the DL with it. I remember meeting one and them asking, “Are you a cousin?!” Smooth.

cousins? that’s really weird…

I chose UNC over Duke, Davidson, and Queens University at Charlotte (Presidential Scholar).
back on topic, although pretty funny about the Moreheads in the above convo! It’s so strange you’re told to keep it secret.

^ I really like that about the program. It’s not ‘secret’, necessarily. It’s just not broadcasted. For example, the names and photos of all the Robertsons are on their website. But our names are not. We are first and foremost tar heels, not moreheads. We just happen to be going to school for free.

chose UNC over duke, emory, usc (california), university of miami, university of toronto, mcgill, and occidental

Sorry to bring us back off topic, but I just wanted to add my thoughts on the whole ‘secrecy’ thing.

I think that the Morehead-Cain Foundation genuinely cares about humility, and that is one of its strengths.

But actively devising ways to prevent people from discovering that you are a Morehead-Cain scholar – exemplified by the “cousins” shenanigans – is not, in my opinion, humble.

Don’t get me wrong. The Morehead-Cain is an exceptional program that pioneered the category of undergraduate merit scholarships, and is still a model for what a world-class scholarship program can and should be.

I guess it’s true that there is a difference between the Morehead and Robertson programs in that the Morehead upperclassmen and staff actively encourage incoming Moreheads to be secretive about it.

I understand the intent of this, and in general I think it is indeed a good idea not to broadcast your scholarship status, but I also think that sometimes people go overboard on the secrecy and it can at times unintentionally come off not as humility but as arrogance (in thinking that it’s something so important and so elite that it needs hiding).

For the record, the names of the incoming Morehead-Cains are announced on the website each year, and you can find names (and, yes, photos) of all of the current Moreheads on the website as well. Just [go to their website](http://www.moreheadcain.org/page/publications) and look at the last few pages of any of the “Year in Review” publications (a directory of Moreheads with names and photos is listed in each).

Yes, they are there if you search for the “Year in Review” publications that really are only intended for alumni, staff, and scholars. There’s no “meet the scholars” type thing that the Robertson website has. And the ‘cousins’ thing is a tradition, not something meant to be be arrogantly deceptive. Guys in fraternities call themselves brothers. Moreheads call each other cousins. It’s not a big deal. We don’t necessarily want our classmates to know we are scholarship recipients.

One thing that the Morehead Foundation really looks for in its candidates and highly values is humility; they truly want people who are not seeking self recognition. That and that alone is the reason that Morehead winners don’t “wear their award on their sleeves” and oftentimes most of their friends and acquaintances don’t know that they are Morehead Scholars. My son had many friends who were unaware of his Morehead status even up to his senior year; they just don’t advertise the fact.

I am guessing that this is why Ephemeral and some of her associates at Finalist weekend were told not to broadcast the fact that they were Finalists or if fortunate enough, had won the Scholarship. I am sure that this message came from current Moreheads they encountered during the weekend and not the Foundation. It’s not a secret society, there are no secret handshakes, they just prefer to lead by example and not by some title that has been bestowed upon them.

The Foundation does not encourage secrecy about the award, they really want people who aren’t in it for the recognition but rather do what they do out of genuine care, passion and compassion.

For the record, the “cousins” thing is a joke passed on from class to class and is not fostered by or encouraged by the Foundation staff. I repeat…it’s a joke, actually a bit of really silly, innocuous humor that is absolutely the farthest thing from any sort of exclusivity or arrogance on the part of Morehead scholars.

This thread reminds me why I hate this website. And why I stopped using it the past two months.

I didn’t mean to cause any trouble, in any way, by mentioning that.

^ Agreed. Everything always has to be an argument.

Oh, and it’s funny you mention the Robertson photos and bios. At Finalist Weekend, we had to take those, and all the current scholars referred to them as ‘the pictures that haunt you forever,’ lol. But yeah, I think it’s great that humility is stressed in both programs. It’s like you’re part of this really great family, but it doesn’t feel exclusive or anything. I remember being so stunned to learn the accomplishments of the people I met (after the fact, and only through word of mouth); everyone was so down to Earth. And every finalist was like, “what am I doing here?” :D
