I-day Scheduling

My mom was wondering what time I-day is typically over (so she can schedule a flight). And, along those lines, does anyone know if there are activities in Annapolis pre-I-day? We are getting into town the day before and I was planning on basically chilling but I didn't want to miss out on anything.
Thanks!

Ahhhh. . . .the annual scheduling question.

I-day will not be over until later in the day, say about 6:30p. [Based on previous years and subject to change this year.]
Unless you live on the East coast, it will be difficult to schedule outbound flights that same evening. That is, departure from yard about 7p; 30 mins to BWI; 30 mins from rental car to terminal; 45 mins to check in and process security.
8:45p earliest you can make a flight.

Good luck.

Only activity pre-IDay is to watch other appointees walk around, bright-eyed and slightly empty-faced in anticipation.

For Class of 2010 there were no pre I day activities other than the Mid store is open and parents can get their Mid Store parent pass.

The last two years (it could be more) the Oath of office has been at 6pm. There has been in the past time to meet with your new Mid for a bit and then evening meal formation has been at 7:30pm

The Parents club of GA has posted the schedules from class of 2011.
USNA Parents Club of Georgia

Remember given the new administration none of this information may be valid.

T-1 I-Day:

-some coaches will host a reception for recruited athletes the day prior to I-day. Depending on the sport, equipment brought from home can be deposited with the team at that point (thus, no need to bring and lug on I-day). Check with your coach if this applies to you.

-foundation students: the foundation folks host a reception for you and your families the day prior to I-day, usually at the officers club on the yard. Contact the foundation directly for date and time.

-napsters: usually report prior to I-day. Check with your schedule at NAPS.

Best of luck!

Parents get a temporary Mid-Store pass for I-Day and the days preceeding in the permit to report. Last year they told us that we could get the actual plastic card during PPW. They did not have the plastic card for I-Day and would not accept applications. It was not a problem, the temporary was good and you will leave with a trunk full of USNA logo items. lol

keep in mind also that you will not be able to park your car (or rental car) on the Yard on I-Day. you will be able to park at the stadium and shuttle service is provided from the Yard to the stadium. last year, the line to wait for the shuttle back to the stadium was in excess of 1 hour and approached 2 hours. we waited until after the last good-bye and march back into Bancroft to get in the line. i would recommend another night in a hotel and fly out the next day.

The wonderful, wonderful USNA Parents' Club of Northern California scheduled a dinner immediately after the last I-Day good-bye. Before we went, it seemed almost like an inconvenience, but I am EVER grateful to the organizers, who know better than we newbies did. It was an emotional time, and a surprising relief to surround ourselves with others in the same boat (or ship, as we're supposed to say).

If you aren't lucky enough to have a Parents' Club event, I urge you to plan something for your family, preferably with other parents, when you learn the day's schedule.

^^^would agree. We had a large group with us, so planned a dinner in one of the resturants by city dock about an hour after the oath of office, giving everyone plenty of time to get there. Booking ahead, we were able to reserve a private room and that worked out great. Keep in mind, it is a long say- add in lots of sun, heat and the emotional factor and some may want to just get back to their hotel for a hot shower and an early night! In our case, everyone did stay the night and we gathered the next morning for breakfast before aunts and uncles, cousins, friends, grandparents and godparents all scattered back to their home states! Personally, I was glad I didn't have to travel anywhere the evening of I-Day....

re: the parking issue ... we'd been queued in on the LOOOOONG wait for the bus to get back to the stadium ... one can walk it without too much difficulty if you've a mind to ... prbly a mile or so.

We went over in mid day, when there was a lull in activities, needed some AC!!!! and a soft seat available in the bus, and rode it back over, and pulled our car onto the Yard. Tons of spaces after the morning activities die down. When it was over, simply left. Saved an hour or 2, when we least wanted to be standing in line.

an alternative for those staying in the annapolis area- many of the hotels offer a free shuttle service to and from Gate 1. We defaulted to this during PPW- but would think it would work out just as well for I-Day. Might want to call ahead to your hotel if this applies to you.
