I'm an incoming freshman who just registered for classes, and by the time I was able to get to an orientation session almost EVERYTHING was closed. I really wanted to take Creative Writing 250, because I'm going to major in English with a concentration in CW... but by the time I went to register there was one spot left in all sections and I didn't get it. I was forced to take WRIT 111... which is a freshman writing class, but I got a 5 on both AP Lang and AP Lit, so I was told I'd be bored in it. Should I try to petition for Creative Writing or get the refresher in WRIT 111 and wait until the spring to take Creative Writing?

Email the professor telling him/her that you are a freshman interested in taking the course, you might be allowed in. If that doesn’t work, registration opens up again on Aug. 27(???) until Sept. 13, so you have a nice window to try to register.

Since you don’t need to take WRIT 111, take another gen ed that you need. There is no reason for sitting in a course you don’t need or enjoy for a whole semester.

1) You will be bored in Writ 111 however, it does fulfill Gen. Ed. requirements which is the benefit besides an easy A and a refresher course.

2) You may end up with a section that enjoys to discuss interesting topics, another redeeming part of the course.

3) I’ve heard that getting into Creative Writing is very difficult to get into. I’m not sure but you might have to be a declared major before you can even sign up.

I agree with glypha, email the professor and ask about petitioning. But even if it doesn’t work out, and you’re stuck in Writ 111 you’ll fulfill a “J” req at least.

caemin - Definitely don’t need to be an english major to take Creative Writing (250). I took it as a freshman for a gen ed. Granted, I came in with 22 credits, so I have earlier registration than most of my peers. But it’s not that hard to get into, so you should be able to get in as a sophomore if not as a freshman.

I’m only reporting what my friend had told me about her attempts to get into the class. She is a prospective English major (hasn’t declared yet) so I wasn’t sure. And she did not come in with that many credits.

If you have the AP/Transfer credit bonus, yes, you’ll have a much easier time getting into classes as a freshman, but without that extra help it does get quite difficult. I entered with 23 credits so I don’t have this problem but my roommate (before she became an RA and got special status XD)and my friend do.

As a firsst semester freshmen, don’t worry about it. Just make sure the courses you take count for something (a gen ed or a major requirement). As you gain more credits, you’ll get higher priority.

Bing gives people 2weeks after classes start to add/drop classes. You might be able to transfer into your cw class. It’s highly competitive tho. I took writ111 and I thought the class was pointless. If you are a good writer (which i was not) it may be a easy class for you. The class is only 4 essays: person, rhetoric, research, opt ed. It’s judged by a committee and your professor will help you. It’s a lot more intense than what I thought it would be.
