i got rejected from santa clara. but i got into uc davis and irvine which is wayy better. and the thing is that i live like 20 minutes away from scu. and i come from a private school which is verrry close to santa clara and almost everyone from my school is admitted. my gpa is a 3.6. my SAT without writing is 1240. my sister got a full scolarship to scu with around my same statitistics a few years ago (but didn't attend). my uncle did his mba there! the only thing is that im not catholic. but i come from a catholic private high school that is closely related with scu!!!!! it doesn't make sense to me! can anyone explain?

I'm so sorry you didn't get accepted to SCU. It sounds like you have some other terrific options, however. I will say, my DD got accepted EA with a 1230 CR/Math SAT and a GPA of 3.85, class rank top 5%. She didn't receive a penny of merit aid. I suspect that they had a very strong applicant pool this year. Honestly, I think if my daughter had applied RD she would not have gotten accepted either.

Congrats on the UC admissions, way cheaper to go there. I have a couple ideas. If they thought you were using them as a safety is one idea. Then there is a certain randomness in some selections. Then there is a community they are trying to develope as they review apps, not that yours was not as good, stats were fine, just when yours came up after others were given the green light. Then I would look at the other students who applied from your school. Maybe they were looking for more average or higher stats students or some other thing, who knows what, when yours came up. Its so hard to know what they are looking for and how it all works.
My s has several friends going to UCDavis in the fall, they got rejected at UC San Diego. Our school has sent 6-10 students to SCU over the past several years, this year only two that we know of, I think that they knew our school helped son. We are 40 minutes from SCU. Your not being Catholic, my opinion, had little to nothing to do with this. We are not catholic.

One other note: baby boom echo is creating a tough time for seniors until 2010. More students applying than ever before to more schools.

Besides cost, what makes Davis and Irvine better?

I've been accepted to Davis & Santa Clara, but I am out of state (as in CT) and don't know enough about either to make that judgement yet...

thanks everyone....and yes it was my safety school

depends on what your going to study. They have a great ventaculture program( wine making is big business here), vet school is great. But you can get an MBA in AG business at SCU. Then there is the class size personal attention at SCU that we like. So it would depend on the individual and how they want to spend their money for an education. Iam not the most well versed person on the UC's and SCU, but I would look to the program desired to decide which school is better. Our son chose SCU with its great econ/finance program over a smaller liberal arts school in Washington whose program looked more tied to the local area but had a global political focus. He didn't apply to any UC's for reasons I'd rather not go into again.

which ones have a better philosophy program?

thats my oldest sons major, he's at UCSC which is not the best phlo program. Santa Barbara has a good philo program, Berkeley both undergrad and grad are strong. I found info at the Philosophical Gourmet helpful a couple years ago. They had listed the best grad philo programs( U of Pittsburg) and said the undergrad program ranking was not as important as a solid program and reputation of the school I think. A problem that UCSC has is that they aren't putting money into their dept. Profs are very good but they tend to leave when a better post at another school opens up. Bad sign. Our son also got inot UCSB which I would have preferred he go to because the school supports the Philo program, which I don't see at UCSC. So take a look at the dept web site and possibly look at how long those profs have been there, where they came from, how often do they leave for greener pastuers. If I can find the article or some link to the site I'll post. Time for dinner here.

I got the link: http://www.philosophicalgourmet.com/rankings.htm

Davis is one that has a top rated philo program, great news. 27th. The link also has a breakdown by type of philo your interested in.
