I don't get this thing where you're looked down upon if you wear nice clothes?

Well, for starters, girls probably wouldn’t get any flak for dressing in style – don’t they have some unspoken competition going on for that kind of thing anyway? :D

But yeah, people do unconsciously judge you for what you wear.

If you wear something different from the norm or the masses, then you will be noticed or judged good or bad. It basically comes down to – are you wearing that style of clothes because that’s who you are, you always dress like that, and to hell what anyone thinks – or is it because you are trying to impress and you are a bit out of character (it’s fine if you are, just don’t let that show through). So some people will unconsciously test you and give you s#%! for it.

That being said, if you want to dress with style you might as well going with something funky/ edgy in college. IE, stay the hell away from khaki pants. Personal tastes may vary, but khaki pants scream wimp and pushover.

Oh, and while we’re on the subject, those multi-colored “white collar” shirts like the poster mentioned above are so outdated (and sort of tacky - you want to still be “white collar” - barf) that at this point they are strictly for geriatrics. (meaning, you can only get away with wearing them if you are over 55).

They are looked down upon because some people try too hard. It’s class, you don’t need to be wearing khakis, sperry’s, a lacoste polo and sweater tied around your neck. If by nice you mean jeans and a basic shirt, you won’t get looked down upon. If you try as hard as the guys on Jersey Shore to go to class, people are going to think you’re a d bag. College is casual wear. You have your entire adult life to wear business casual and to dress up to conform to a dress code, take advantage of being able to wear sweats everyday.

This is because “No one cares what they wear to class, so just wear whatever!”.

Seriously. Like poeple said here, where what you want. I can’t imagine why people would look down on you for wearing “nice clothes.” The closest I see that people would have a problem is that they would assume the clothes your wearing (khakis, polo) make you seem like a “rich, snobbish a**hole.” Don’t you just love society, their double standards and judgmental attitudies? :D

I feel for you, OP. So what if I dress like a schoolgirl? Leave me alone, people! ;_;

why wear sweats to class tho really? They look extremely unprofessional (i mean ok in a lecture hall i guess). Isn’t college a time of growth and maturation (finally being on your own). Wearing sweats pants just gives off a really bad vibe imo to professors and other students like u dont care what you look like. Do professional adults that have real jobs wear sweats to work? I think college is a time where you need to start making the transition to adulthood so dress like an adult.

Not wearing sweats isn’t more “adult.”

khakis & a polo make u look old @ hell. wear jeans or diff. color chinos bro.

Why do I get the image in my head of someone wearing an unwashed T-shirt with numerous stains and sweatpants leeching off some fraternity’s wireless?

I really dont mix khakis and polos

If I wear polos it is usually with jeans

and If I wear khaki shorts it is usually with a t shirt of some kind

I disagree with the whole freshman looking nice thing. freshman dont understand much of the college style yet so wear “outdated” clothes like cargo shorts, hollister, Abercrombie and Fitch etc. So when they try to look nice they stick out. The rest usually have a bunch of shirts they recently bought with the name of the university on it or old HS shirts

Depends on the environment. Dressing nicely is a norm at more conservative schools like Vanderbilt.

It’s not ‘looking down’ as in you’re worse than them, it’s just a first impression judgment. “He puts in a lot of effort to wear expensive clothing, is he trying to show off? Might be arrogant…” that sort of stuff. You stand out like a sore thumb amongst a crowd of Abercrombie drones.

The college I’m going to be attending next week has a pretty casual style and I’m going to have 5-10 buttondowns I’ll wear regularly, around 5 Ralph Lauren polos, and a few Aeropostale shirts along with a few pairs of cargo shorts. Dress ‘casual nice’ and put on a friendly face and nobody will think the worse of it, just don’t dress “prissy nice” and walk around as if you aren’t open to conversation.

crazyday… how do you go from ralph lauren to aeropostale? I still don’t get how people wear aeropostale in college. Its cheap. You would be better off wearing ANF or just sticking to polo. LOL at people that wear aeropostale in college. I think anyone that wears aero is cheap.

“take advantage of being able to wear sweatpants”

@tiff: I hope you weren’t being serious.

^^^ Ummm, why?

Do you know how much it sucks having to get dressed up everyday?

I wish I could go back to wearing sweats everday - that would be awesome!

(rips a huge fart. scratches potbelly.)

No I don’t actually. Shirt, pants, belt, socks, and shoes seems like a no brainer to me.

Maybe it’s because in boot camp we had 10 second dress drills.

I think personally that that any kind of store like A&F, Hollister, and Aero are cheap and look juvenile on anyone wearing them. I don’t think freshman get looked down upon for dressing nice? I know personally, that everything in my closet is either J. Crew, Rugby, Sperry and Polo so by these standards I always look “nice” however it is just my personal style. Just wear what you want and don’t worry about people judging you as they are just obviously jealous.

Yes, it is cheap and it accomplishes the same Abercrombie look as far as I’m concerned. I don’t quite have the money to go blow fifty bucks for a shirt, especially when the quality is BETTER for the cheaper shirt. If someone is going to judge me because I’m wearing aeropostale instead of anf, they can get ****ed.

People in expensive clothing tend to be either entitled or weird (at this age).

:slight_smile: 10char10char

“Put your left boot sock on right ****ing now, scream ‘Aye, Sir!’”
“AYE, SIR!”
“Ten, nine, eight-seven-six-five-four-three-two-AND-one.”
“DONE, SIR!”
“Oh, some of you didn’t make it. Want to play games? Very well, you have ten seconds to take your left boot sock off right now, scream ‘Aye, Sir’”

Yes, I was there too.
