I am currently a senior and I am extremely worried and stressed because I don’t know what to major in. For the longest i time I thought I wanted to major in business admin or marketing but after a lot of thinking i decided that’s not the best route to go. I think business admin is too broad and it’s hard to have a good job in marketing because it’s not always stable or it’s just hard to find a job. (I forgot to mention I am going to a community college then transfer to a UC) One thing I have always been interested in is dentistry. I would love to pursue a career in that but my parents don’t want me to try because it’s expensive, so much school (8 years), and probably don’t think I can do it. I kind of doubt myself too, if I’m being honest. I don’t want to go to college not knowing what I want to do because that is a waste of time and money. I don’t really know where i’m going with this but I just need some type of advice; anything would be helpful. Thank you.
Your way to early to be stressing about a major. Although it is good to find your major earlier it shouldn’t matter as much in your case since you are going to a community college. You could slay out your general ed courses, pick courses that interest you and are needed for general ed.
Ps. I’m a sophomore in community college, and I’ve switched majors twice.
It is always beneficial to have settled on a major before entering college. There are students choosing majors in 9th grade and choosing their AP courses in high school accordingly.
Becoming a dentist is likely to lead to good life outcomes. Your academic performance in high school, especially in science and math, will tell you if you will do well in the courses needed. If you decide on it, you can take loans.
While business at bachelor’s level might not be too beneficial, marketing could be if you have the natural inclination for it and are an extrovert.
Agree, in general you don’t need to decide a major now. Take intro. level classes in different areas of interest and try to get a sense of where your interests and aptitudes lie. That said, if you decide you want a business curriculum or take the coursework required for dental school you should find out what classes would be needed for a successful transfer and try to get a start on them before you finish CC.
