I don't know where to go... SVA or UCF (or Ringling) for animation? Help!

@gouf78 I glanced at Glenn Vilppu’s work, I now have an idea of the work I should have in my portfolio. I will admit, I’m sort of lacking figure drawings in my portfolio so I’m trying to find a way to draw figures at the moment. I draw quick sketches of people in public but it’s not the same as having a proper model to do poses. Do you know if they’re looking for fully rendered figure drawings, quick sketches, or a little bit of both?

@CAShirl Congratz to your daughter! I’m currently trying to find a way to draw figures. I think it’s too late for me to register for a figure drawing class at my community college (I don’t even think those types of classes are even available but I’ll check). I draw quick observational drawings of people in public but it’s not the same as having a proper model to draw from.

@cheesenachos1 I wouldn’t worry about lack of NASAD-accreditation for SCAD. They ARE accredited by the same regional organization that accredits UGAaetc. (I think Emory too?) so standard accreditation for the area. NASAD has been great at at raising quality of the art/design programs and standardizing core/foundational instruction, but they do have a bit of a guild mindset. Not sure that UCF is “accredited” by NASAD either but I could be misremembering (so best to look that up if you are concerned). As long as the program provides a rigorous foundation year with lots of drawing, design and 3D/4D and you feel it’s a good fit then whether it’s a member of NASAD isn’t really that important. One benefit of looking at NASAD-accredited schools, though is that they participate in National Portfolio Days and you can get feedback on your portfolio at one one these. Non-NASAD-accredited schools aren’t invited.

My daughter qualified for, I think, three scholarships at SCAD including one for her HS academic performance and test scores. She did submit a portfolio but it wasn’t the strongest aspect of her application - did get a bit of money for it, though (any bit helps). We laid out our financial situation and explained the financial assistance she was given at UCF and SCAD made sure she had enough so that attending was possible. But yeah - it IS expensive.

@cheesenachos1 Don’t know where exactly you are in Florida, but a lot of studios hold drop-in sessions also. This was just one thing I found when I searched.

@gouf78 Thank you and thank you for sharing your daughter’s experiences. My D was so excited when she the projects that the students were working on. I think it’s going to be a great experience for her. One more final to get through in HS and then it’s all Ringling.

Is anyone waiting to hear back from the UCF film school on acceptance? My son was accepted to the general college at UCF awhile back but is anxiously waiting to hear from the film school that required a separate application. The website says we will hear back around March 15 but it would be nice to hear back sooner. Any feedback on the UCF film program as we believe the production department is very good? Thanks!
