I am a freshman at Mizzou and I am in the business program hoping to go into accounting. I am in a sorority and I have been trying to make friends but it is really difficult. I don’t feel like I fit into the school with these types of people and I am having major doubts about this school. I never wanted to come here in the first place, I came for the residency after the first year and masters program for accounting. I just don’t think I fit in here, but the program and the residency is what would keep me here. Please help me! Should I transfer???
"Should I transfer??? "
It is very hard to say based on your post. My first guess is “probably NOT”. A few quick thoughts:
It sounds like you are saying that from an academic and major point of view Mizzou is a good fit to what you want to study. Is this correct? Are you doing well in your classes?
Is the main problem that you are having trouble meeting the type of people that you want to hang out with?
Any university is going to have a lot of students and a very wide range of students. The more outgoing and party-oriented students are probably going to be the easiest to meet at any school. More introverted students might be a bit more difficult to meet. However, there are going to be students like you at pretty much any school – particularly at any school that is academically a reasonable match to your abilities. As such I am inclined to think that you might need to try other approaches to meeting people that you like.
One option is to look at what sort of clubs and activities the school offers. There should be lots of activities that you have no interest in at all, but a few that you do find interesting. If one activity is full of people that you don’t like, then try a different activity.
You might also want to talk to someone at the counseling center at your school. For example, you can talk to them about what sort of activities you find interesting and what sort of people you are comfortable with, and they will know what is available at your school.
Going to university is a major life change for every student. It is still quite early in your university career but I think that things will get better over time. How long this will take will vary from student to student and will depend upon a number of factors, including what you do to find your fit.
Yes, this is a great place for my major! And I’m doing ok in my classes! Thank you! I guess I’ll just have to try different approaches and find a club to get into!! Thank you for your help!
I tend to agree with DadTwoGirls. If you were going to say, a small LAC and you know you hate the environment already, or if you were going to a large, impersonal university and need a small LAC, then transferring right away may make sense. However, Mizzou (like a lot of state flagship universities) has a really diverse campus with many different options and social scenes. It sounds as if you just haven’t found your “people” yet – once you do, I guarantee you will feel a lot better about the social scene. If you’re a strong student, the Honors program provides a more small, personal environment as well.
If, after some time, you realize that would prefer a more urban campus or something, then that’s the time to consider transferring. But for now, I would definitely try to explore different aspects of campus and see if you can make things work. Sometimes it just takes time Good luck!
Mizzou is a great school with lots of opportunities. You said you’re in a sorority, but you must have just rushed and not be living there. Are you living in a dorm? There is a lot of dorm life before you move into the sorority as a sophomore. If you’re not living in a dorm or sorority life can be a little isolated. You’ll need to join the music department or a political group or some other group in order to get a social life. Go check out the scene at the Heidelberg, and the bulletin boards. Get a part time job at Shakespeares. Go to the women’s basketball games. If you don’t like the sorority you rushed, look into getting into a different one or leaving.
You’re in a degree program that is a bachelors/masters – will that take more than 4 years? If so, you’re going to be in Columbia a very long time. Are you sure now this is the career you want? Make friends with some of the teachers in the accounting department and see if you can get involved in some of their programs. When I was there, there were businesses that came to campus frequently to speak and recruit. There are also research professors that like students who get good grades to help with research projects.
As I recall, accounting classes were really hard. But I’m sure there’s some sort of pre-CPA club you could join.
