I don't understand...

What is the point of making chance threads?

I have been a member of CC long enough to realize the futility of these threads.

They basically consist of smart kids spending a lot of time to type up all their stats and a long list of extracurriculars and service hours. Then saying, "Chance me for (insert Ivys here) and (insert any other school within the top 20 on US news here).

Firsts of all, if you are apparently pretty smart if you are applying to those selective schools. Go to each of their websites and look up the freshmen class profiles and average GPAs and test scores. I am not an admissions counselor, nor is anyone else here. Furthermore every Ivy League school is a reach regardless of if you have a 2400 SAT.

Secondly, realize that rarely anybody is ever going to spend the time to read your huge list of extracurricular activities; we will do the quick once-over. If it looks like a fairly long list with a few leaderships then you're golden. But nobody actually cares.

I believe that most people are unsure and or insecure about their potential to be accepted to these schools, as no one can be sure until they are actually accepted. So that is my guess as to why people formulate chance threads. If you would like to share a reason that you find chance threads useful and productive, do share. I just wanted to set this straight; I apologize if I am being overly-cynical.

And I just wanted to add that a “good school” is not always one that is near the top of a rankings list that was created by a magazine company. A “top” school is one that is a good fit for you, and which you can afford. That’s jolly-good if you can get into Princeton, but if you are miserable there and go into debt to go there then it is not a top school at all. Feel free to agree/disagree or add any thoughts.

I think your opinion is valid and in general I see it as a second-opinion sort of thing. I know for myself personally, I would not rely on this site to determine my chances of getting into any school, even if it’s an easy school to get into, as like you said, no one here is an admission counselor. But I also understand the reasons as to why I’ve posted here and others do, it just helps to have other opinions and occasionally you can run into some people with great advice, just my own opinion though.
