Stupid "Chances" Threads on top schools

It is rediculous if you think about it for anyone on here to post their stats and ask your opinion on their chances at top schools.

Especially with top schools, you can be a perfect student yet still get rejected. Ivies and other top universities are weird like that. They each have their own system on how to judge. A system none of us know about.

So if your interested in a top school, apply. No one on here can give you a definitive answer because we don't work there!

It is much easier to get the opinion of someone if your looking into less comptetive schools or state schools. It is easier to determine accepted/rejected based on your stats.

So if your interested in a top school, don't look here. Your wasting your time telling us why your so "good" for that school.

dude this has been discussed like 456497121 times...and i believe that it has been determined that people who want to go ivy are going to apply anyway, they are generally just looking for some support or confidence from others. besides, i think it pays to get some feedback from people your same age going through the same admissions process as you, if, for nothing else, some suggests or, at the very least, some support.

plus, many dont really have anything better to do :)

"So if your interested in a top school, apply. No one on here can give you a definitive answer because we don't work there!"

When I say "match", it means that the studen has slightly over 50% chance.

The opinionated system at CC revolves around our estimates: that means we do not have to simply state "yes" or "no".

No one can ever give a definitive answer on college admissions, but CC can come pretty close.

haha BS, CC can be so frikin off!

what do these people know...absolutely nothing! in most cases they just compare your SAT with the schools average and disregard everything else. These people dnt know jack.

This whole idea should be made into a sticy and required for reading by all new forum members.

CC can be pretty close; they can be frikin off.

These two can both be true.

Doogie: when I'm giving estimates for UC school, I look mainly at SATs and GPA because it really is over 80% of the admission process. However, for private schools like the Ivy League, I do consider the extra-curriculars very much.

and what credentials do you have

I need credentials to have opinions?

to tell sum1 they def will or will not get in, i think so...i see it all the time

they aren't saying they will guaruntee they will get in, just that in their opinion they should be able to get in

people sometimes need others to let them know to stop worrying so much and a lot of the time people view their own stats too harshly or too generously so it helps to have other people's opinions

i dont like the people on here who think they r the say all end all word in these things....you all know which kinda people im talkin about too

In general WAMC threads are useless, but there are a number of ways in which they can be useful:

1) The person is NOT going to be admitted. 2.0 GPA, no ecs, not an URM, from Mass., 1700 SAT, and wants to go to Harvard.

2) You can suggest new schools. Many WAMC posters are new to CC and the college search. These threads are a great way to suggest new schools.

3) You can give them an idea of what to improve. Suggesting a summer program, a class to take, etc. can be very helpful to new posters.

but u know wut, why shouldnt they apply...who r u to say they wont, u dnt know wut their full story is ya their chances r slim, but u shouldnt be the person telling them where to apply

I've never (at least, I think I haven't) told anyone they shouldn't apply somewhere because I don't think they'll get in. As a matter of fact, I often encourage people to apply, and to ask for fee waivers if they can. What I will do, however, is give them a general idea of the competitive nature of the applicant pool. :)

yup thats good, but u know some people who do the exact opposite of that and who have no right to do so

i really have not seen any definite yes or no responses in the wamc threads, i think that ppl know that they are not adcoms (although maybe some are?) and they are merely making suggestions and sharing opinions...nothing's ever set in stone

True enough. Because, it seems, so many kids on CC who respond to WAMC posts don't take the time to actually research the admissions stats of the school or schools in question. Truth is, most of kids who want to know their chances can find out for themselves if they're willing to spend a little time. For example, the address below links to the UPenn "Incoming Student Profile: Class of 2009" page.

http://www.admissionsug.upenn.edu/applying/profile.php

If anybody is interested in applying to UPenn (or any of the Ivies for that matter), they can compare their stats to the stats listed and get a pretty good idea what their chances would be. Most top schools post similar information at their websites.

Now, if you're going to say "But there are other factors involved..." I agree. But for your average, unhooked Ivy applicant (and that's most of the kids who apply) the stats listed on the UPenn page can serve as a pretty good indicator.

"i dont like the people on here who think they r the say all end all word in these things....you all know which kinda people im talkin about too"

Doogie, I hope you are not talking about me. I find it annoying when people do that too and I was not acting like my opinion was the "end all word." I was just adding my opinion on the subject. If you don't agree with my opinion that is fine but don't attack me.

well when you really get down the basics...

the thread is a CHANCES thread
people post.
and they get replies.
its all a voluntary exchange
if people think that everyone on CC is unqualified, they won't post and ask for chances

If people didn't believe they could get into ivies with below average stats because "they look at the whole person", Harvard would take many more than 1/11.
