My parents plan on sending me to Manipal University in India but they're not acknowledging the fact I don't want to go. They're even making me take the SATs, but whats the point if they're sending me to India? Help me please!

Your parents can’t force you to go to a certain college…once you turn 18, you make your own decisions. Stand up for yourself.

Make a good case to how people who are unhappy where they are generally do badly.

Or do you have an idea where you want to go instead? I would present that option to your parents on how that particular college would suit you better. Your environment affects how you study, especially when you hate where you are.

Anyway, apply to lots of other schools, so you can show your parents other options. Also, force them to visit other schools with you, so they see how amazing other schools are!

Why do your parents want you to go to India?

What is your alternative plan?

They say it’s faster to do med school there, but I’d rather spend the extra 2 years here and do it. I’m taking SATS and SAT2s in Bio to prove to them I can stay here, but they are very stubborn and insistant of me going!

Try pointing out that 2 years less doesn’t mean anything. It’s entirely possible you’ll be losing 2 years of education if you go there, and, if not, it will likely just be an accelerated plan, which you could organize here.

And, as said, if you will be 18 before the school year, you can just say,“No.”

Indian parents are very strict, and they barely listen to me. I know it’s better here, but they’re only doing it cause they think I have no chance here. It’s harder over there than here, however.

Is this the university [Welcome to Manipal University!](<a href=“Oops! Page not found”>Oops! Page not found)
Looks pretty good I think you should be open to both the US and India options. Take a tour, I have had some indian friends pull their kids out of US colleges as well. Decide what you really want. Are you set on becoming a doctor? If so, you need to think about how to get there, if you think pre-med in USA is the way to go, prove it to your parents by getting into a good program and good scores. I think your parents are thinking of India as a backup maybe? By the way, american kids (of indian origin) the ones I know, have actually fit in very well in Indian programs. So be open to all options. Go and tour the universities. Good luck.

Yes, that’s the college. I’m not sure at the moment. I don’t know what I want to major in. I want to stay here, but for a year. I can stay undecided for a year and if I decide to do Pre Med, and I might go to India. Is that a good idea?

I used to live in India, I just moved to Texas this year. But I was born in America… anyway I loved in Bangalore, which is close to manipal. I had a few friends from my school over there go to manipal. Let me tell you that it is known as a party college among college students. For Indian standards, its bad.
True, the schools there are cheaper… seem like a better option because they will give you your degree faster… but education is 10 times better in America. Be it medical… engineering… Anything.
Indian education is a lot different and if you’re not used to memorizing a whole text book for a test, I would strongly recommend you stay in America. My parents realized the difference in education since we lived in both countries… and hence allowed me and my brother to come to America for our education. Hope this helps

Thanks Axe. My parents were born and brought up there, thats why they have the mentality that education there is the BEST and it’s **** here. lmfaoo it’s very annoying and they don’t listen to me. Yes, It’s a party school. However, it’s full of NRI’s thats why my parents plan on sending me there. Plus, isn’t it one of the top colleges? I’d prefer to go to California or Texas for my education, or stay in the northeast

True ut is full of nri’s and hence it is full if parties. It is considered one if the better schools for medicine. I have been in India for half my life and America for half so I know both sides of the story. You’re right to say education is not good there, but you might have some fun. If you do end up going there, make the best of it, Bangalore is close by and its one if the major cities so there are a log concerts, events etc happening.
Yeah, Texas and California would be good choices.
Try and get some relatives to help you back your decision. Parents listen to relatives. And other Indian friends. Try that, if that doesn’t work, run away. I’m just kidding. They’ll end up agreeing with you, probably. So just keep arguing and doing good in school and get good sat scores, etc and they’ll let you.

Yeah thats true. I heard Bangalore is about 5 hours away from Manipal though. And yeah I’d rather stay here again, education is better.
And relatives are with my parents! Stressing me and pressuring me into going there! haaha, running away works! jk ;D
Hopefully they will listen to me. Do you think I should stay here for one year undecided, and then make the decision or will i waste time?

hey why you don’t want to go to India when your parents wants and if you really don’t like to go then convince your parents and explain the reasons. They will understand you as well. Running away is not the solution.

That’s true… but Indian parents = very hard to convince.

Having spent every summer of my life in Udupi (~10 minutes from Manipal), I can tell you that Manipal is an excellent medical school. I can also tell you that residency in India is absolutely terrible. There is probably plenty of info on the web about Indian residency.

If you try to convince your parents armed with that info, I think you’ve got a better chance ;)

It seems to me your parents are forcing you into medical, when you are not sure of it yet. I hope they know forcing teenagers to do something against their will can backfire. You can try having your counselors here talk to your parents?

And kids can go wayward in US and India, in undergrad. I have seen that happen in India (in the rich private schools that are full of NRI kids). And of course, kids drop out of college all the time here in the US as well.

Exactly why I thin I’ll fail. I want to go into International Business or IB/Finance Double major. I really enjoy traveling and learning new cultures, markets and going to other countries. I also really want to study abroad in China and other countries.

My Indian parents probably won’t realize/care this is my ambition, instead they try to force kids to be a doctor which is a “godly job” in their eyes, even though I could make as much or more as a business man and it interests me more. I’m already doing bad in Bio (subject and SAT) and can’t stand the fact of studying it for the rest of my life. Any advice?

Exactly why I think I’ll fail*

Sorry about the spelling and double post.
Bump*

Manipal is a good college, esp for engineering. You should be fine.
