I dont where or if I should apply

I am new to this forum but I could really use any help possible.

Here is the deal. I want to major in economics and at my current school and I have taken quite a few upper level course but I want to public economics. Unfortunatly they dont offer any public economics at my school and by that I mean NO classes. Anyway, the problem is I am at my local third tier University and I just started my third year. I called a few good schools and most said that the fact that I have around 85 credits doesnt matter as long as I have a reason to transfer and I complete 60 credits most of my major's classes and 2 years at the school.
I was wondering how true this is and whether my reason for transfering is good enough to make up for my numerous credits. I want to transfer at semester but I am not sure where I could get in. Please help, I feel like I am in first gear at my University.

I can write a good essay and I will have good recs.

Where should I apply, is Cornell far out of reach? I got waitlisted at Claremont-McKenna as a freshman and I think I will reapply.

Thanks, sorry for being so long winded.

Cornell isn't out of reach.

Also, Chicago has one of the best economics departments in the country. I bet you'd get in there.

plz stop underestimating Cornell

lol, NJCC I agree with you. It seems that people do underestimate Cornell. I mean I have a gt with them and I'm even worrying.

I looked at University of Chicago but it only accepts fall transfers. I would love to go there but I already have too many credits and would be wasting my time at my university for another semester (working on a second major). I thought about an internship in the spring but if I got into good schools for next semester I wouldnt want to risk another application process.

So, some of you think I have a chance and some say that dont even have a prayer? Could someone give more details? I know my SAT is really low but unfortunatly I was pretty apathetic in H.S. Anyway, besides Cornell does anyone know about Claremont-McKenna, I know they have a very good economics program. What other schools would anyone suggest? I have looked at WashU, Emory, Rice and Northwestern.....

I really appreciate all of the help.

Cornell, not out of reach, very strong economics department. You can specificly study labor economics at Cornell's school of industrial and labor relations. This is very close to public economics i believe. Economics is also affered at the college of arts and sciences, and i believe more economics courses are offered at the college of agricultre and life sciences (that's where the undergraduate business program is located). Browse the website, i'm certain Cornell has a program you can work with.

where did I underestimate cornell? I said it was "not out of reach", not that the op would be a shoe in.

Hey Gomestar
How do you like the industrial relations and organization program. Is it easier or harder to get into tan the college of arts and sciences (I'm from Texas). Also, since economics is a popular major, will it be harder to get in to economics departments or.....
I am guessing you transfered, if so whatare the general stats for a transfer student.

Thanks, I appreciate the info

Admission percentage for transferring to Claremont-McKenna is pretty low, 17%, but make sure the whole credit issue works out first. No need to waste $60 bucks or so.

Where did you get the transfer rate percentage for claremont mckenna? The number on ther website is higher. Also, what do you mean by "make sure the whole credit issue works out first?" Does every GE requirment need to be filled? I got a preliminary credit evaluation and all they said was that my classes will transfer.
Thanks
