I enjoyed Bucknell, can you compare Lehigh

I did a Pennsilvania college road trip with my parents and for some stupid reason I did not visit Lehigh. I went to Villanova and Bucknell and I really enjoyed those two campuses the school. The only bad thing I could possibly say about Bucknell is how rural it is, 2.5 hours from philly, although some said it adds to the school community, so idk whether it will be that bad. Also, Bucknell and Villanova are both target schools for me, not reachers or likelies so I'm pretty sure Lehigh would also be a target school. I plan on majoring in Business/Economics and some math so Lehigh would be a good fit in that department.

Bucknell had a beautiful campuss and student body and I really enjoyed looking at the female eye candy. lol. I am hispanic, but already go to a mostly white preppy school, so the social transition wouldn't be that bad. I also consider myself somewhat of a jock and like to party and hit up the kegs on weekends, however I never let this come in the way of academics. Can you compare the two campuses, the two social scenes, the two student bodies, the two academics/career placement, and anything else you consider significant. Bucknell said they have a really good career placement programs and that they are in the process of making an official Business programs. Lehigh is an hour and twenty minutes from Philly and an hour and a half from NYC so it isn't that bad.

The only two things that I can say are bad about Lehigh are the male to female ratio, 60% guys and 40% girls, and college prow.ler also rated their girls a B as opposed to Bucknell's A. And lastly this is going to sound like a joke, but I self diagnosed myself with mild OCD (lol) and can't get over the fact of how ugly the brown and white school colors are.

I did not visit Bucknell myself but I can tell you these things.

Lehigh’s campus is extremely beautiful. I did not visit any school with a nicer campus…and there were schools known for their campuses on that list.

Lehigh’s party scene is bar none for the school’s size. I promise.

The student body’s motto is more or less Work Hard, Party Harder. We love to have a great time but we’re there to go to school and get a solid degree.

Lehigh’s business school is one of the best in the nation. We were ranked Top 25 this year. Bucknell is in the process of making an Official business program…?

The guy girl ratio has been getting better each year. My class (2014) was about 55-45 in favor of guys.

The guy girl ratio at parties is never an issue due to the nature of parties… 30-40 guys with 30-40 girls by default. Sometimes more than 1 sorority will be at one fraternity’s party.

The girls really aren’t that bad. Especially not at the frat parties.

Thanks for the post copaman. I have heard several things about the lehigh campus such as it is very dark and gloomy, old, cramped into the edge of a hill, and a sketchy area around the campus.

As far as what the campus looks like, you should visit or view the pictures on the top of this page (Recent Photos) - it is definitely not dark and gloomy. It is on a steep hill, so there aren’t too many overweight people at Lehigh! I would not consider it cramped either, but then I don’t live there.

I won’t comment about the girls other than to say it irks me to hear young men referring to young women as eye candy, so I won’t go there. Again, I would visit and make up your own mind on that front as well.

Good luck.

I applied to Bucknell, Villanova, and Lehigh, and I got into all of them. I chose Lehigh, so maybe I can help you out.

Bucknell’s campus is very beautiful, however Lehigh’s is GORGEOUS. More so than Bucknell’s, most definitely. I would say Lehigh is still rural, but a bit less rural than Bucknell. Bucknell’s surrounding area is kind of dead. Lehigh’s is only slightly better - but it’s only an hour and a half away from Philly and NYC, so there are definitely a lot of opportunities. I also liked the fact that Lehigh is a bit bigger, student body wise. I personally don’t like small schools - I went to a small private high school, and I wanted something bigger, but that still had small class sizes and personal attention.

I don’t really like brown and white…but I personally like brown and white better than blue and orange. Would you ever normally wear blue and orange together? But brown and white go together fine. I’d also rather be a mountain hawk than a bison.

Lehigh has a lot of school spirit! We’re big on sports, but we are intelligent, hard-working students. Also…it’s kind of sad to judge a school by internet ratings on girls. You’re going to find gorgeous people wherever you go, so I would not harp on that.

Also, Lehigh is not gloomy at all. Nor do I think it’s cramped. The buildings are beautiful! And like mumof2boyz said, it’s on a big hill…no one has to worry about the freshman fifteen or about being overweight!

Good luck with everything!

Can anyone talk about the business program at Lehigh? I’ve heard that Engineering and Business are the two best programs on campus and that this is a factor to the male/female ration.

I’m a finance major so I can tell you a little about that. The program is pretty solid, only thing it really lacks in my opinion is recruiting for investment banking but I can see that improving in the future. We have an organization called the Wallstreet Council that organizes networking and informational events and we have some interesting guest speakers come and give presentations occasionally (for example, an alumnus who’s the head of global currency trading at baml came and gave a presentation). We have an investment club that manages real money allocated from the endowment and a really cool classroom called the financial services lab that has all kinds of professional software.

We also have some unique programs like IBE (Integrated Business and Engineering) and CSB (Computer Science and Business). Accounting majors get good recruiting from the Big 4. Overall, we have a pretty strong alumni base in many areas of business that are receptive if you reach out to them for advice.

I toured both campuses yesterday on the tail end of a week-long trip. It seems like there are some academic similarities between the schools, but the campuses almost couldn’t be more different. It was a sunny day when we visited Lehigh, and even with a cloudless sky, it was easy to see how some would find it gloomy. The dense trees keep most of the campus in shadows. The buildings have a look that I’m sure some find spooky and threatening, but others would find stunning and historic. In many ways a true love-it-or-hate-it place. I haven’t seen any photos of it that accurately capture the look and atmosphere.

One thing that is beyond dispute is that it has to be one of the hilliest campuses in the world.

Wow, to each his own I guess. Gloomy is last word I would use to describe Lehigh. Haven’t seem Bucknell, but toured most of the Ivies with my son and found Lehigh totally stunning.

Schmaltz must be a Bucknell legacy ;)

Even on rainy, windy, cloudy, cold days, it still feels like I’m going to school at Hogwarts.

I have nothing to do with either school. I agree with the Hogwarts resemblance…but some people find the Hogwarts atmosphere to be a little dark and spooky. Bucknell is almost too sunny, airy, fresh, and clean.

It is hard for me to accept the spooky description - maybe because it is such a friendly warm place, but yeah, if you find old stone buildings with torrets spooky, then Lehigh would not be the best place to go, perhaps a college with more modern buildings would appeal more.

I happen to like that there are mature trees and a lot of greenery, but if you find that gloomy, then perhaps a campus without large trees would be more appealling.

It is an individual taste thing, but the feeling of the campus is an important thing, so go with your gut.

If even the defenders are going to say a place looks and feels like Hogwarts, how is it surprising that some people might find it gloomy? The Harry Potter movies don’t exactly have a sunny Disneyland or Malibu atmosphere. One of my daughters and I rather liked Lehigh, and thought its buildings were amazing. But my wife and other daughter got the creeps.

So far I have visited the following schools:
Babson, Boston College, tufts, Harvard, Amherst, UVA, American, GW, Georgetown, Loyola Maryland, Johns Hopkins, Upenn, Villanova, Haverford, Swarthmore, Bucknell.

Is there possibly andy resemblance that Lehigh has to one of those schools, in some shape or form? Can you compare Lehigh to any of those schools?

I should’ve visited the school, big mistake. -_-

Some people think BC is hilly, but it’s a pool table compared to Lehigh. Also, BC and Lehigh have Gothic-like architecture, but BC’s is more graceful with lots of vertical lines. At BC, my kids asked why every building looks like a church. Lehigh’s buildings look stronger, more solid, and heavier–more like Medieval fortresses. The stones of the buildings also have some shading/staining that doesn’t show up in photos that makes the buildings seem older than those at BC.

BC and Lehigh also both have an “uphill” campus that isn’t visible from the main part of the campus.

I think there is more space between the buildings at BC than at Lehigh. There is certainly an airier and more open feeling at BC.

Lehigh reminded me a little bit of Colgate.

The settings are radically different: Bucknell in small town America. Lehigh in the middle of a million person metro area (Allentown/Lehigh Valley) with 6 other colleges, cultural amenities, shopping etc within 10 minute drive South Bethlehem, right around Lehigh, certainly has its sketchy areas but is coming around and downtown historic Bethlehem is really nice.
