I have a real tough situation here. The first quarter of my senior year I received a 44 for one of the two AP classes I am taking. My school only gives out grades at the end of each year but they might still be able to see the progresses that I am making so far and admission officials will eventually see those grades, and they will affect my overall GPA. I am doing decent with all my other classes it's just this particular course that I'd lost interests in. Does anyone have similar experiences and got accepted anyways? Would you recommend me to send an E-mail to my ED school and explain my situation even though chances are they haven't received those grades yet?

Your school will send first quarter grades to schools that you apply to early action/decision and will send midterm grades to regular decision schools. So I assume that your ED school will receive the grade.

What would you say in the explanation?

My guidance counselor told me you can request to not send in your quarter grades to your ED/EA schools if they don’t require quarter grades.
I second brennz question. Is there a legitimate reason you failed? If so I would explain it.

Well it has been kind of weird for me. I actually moved after my junior year so it’s my first year in a different high school. This among various of other things I guess. I asked my guidance counselor and she said that this school does not give out grades until the end of the year. I don’t know if this means they are not sending the scores because they are not available, but they did send the mid year report to my ED school which in my knowledge includes the first quarter grades of my senior year? Would this be a deciding factor of my admission process? Or would they be nice about it and reach out to me and let me have a chance to offer them an explaination? I really don’t know.

Most ED schools require some sort of midterm senior grades. I’d immediately consider switching my application to RD - there’s no way almost any school will let you in with an F on a midterm senior report - at best you’ll be deferred, most likely rejected. Try and salvage the grade by the end of first semester - it’s your best shot. No explanation will fix this.

No, I wouldn’t explain it to them unless they ask during an interview or something like that (“losing interest” will not convince them). You’ll need to pull your grade up in that class at least by the end of the year.

I’m only saying “by the end of the year” because you may not need to send your mid year report. If you end up not having to send those in, you might get accepted. HOWEVER, colleges can rescind admission.

Colleges most likely will not revoke their decisions for a small slip in your senior year grades, but an F might convince them to.

I will pull the grades up for sure, but in the meantime I could only pray to get in? It’s my first day using this site and i appreciate you guys helping out. Thanks.

Well this is bad timing. I agree with @MrMom62 62 it would probably be best to change your ED app to RD.
