So, I was rejected/waitlisted from most of my top choices. I was only accepted to UC-Berkeley, and UMich... and they were definitely not my top choices when I applied. (Sorry if that sounds bratty).

Anyway, I visted UMich, and I am in LOVE! It's seriously the most awesome school ever... and I feel lucky to have been rejected by my top choices. If I were accepted to them, I would have just thrown away the UMich acceptance packet and wouldn't have even considered it.

I couldn't be happier... and now I am EXTREMELY excited to be attending UMich next year. GO BLUE!

Point of this thread: Discuss similar situations; tell future applicants not to lose all hope if you get rejected from your top choices, and highlight the importance of applying to match and safety schools.

Good story man, glad you loved Michigan. I think its crazy when all these kids get depressed and consider suicide when they get rejected from their top school.

But don't expect Michigan to be playing in the NC any time soon ;)

Well, I just can't see them playing for the NC next year based on the fact that they couldn't beat a wounded USC this year.

However, the reason I say that the future looks bright is because of their incoming freshmen QB Ryan Mallet, kids going to be something special.

You remind me of Freckly Becky. Last year, she was rejected from the Ivies that had accepted her twin brother, including EA. She had to go to her safety, Michigan. She ended up loving it, and even got a starring role in one of their fall theatrical productions.

Anyone who's feeling bad about having to go to a less preferred college should find her threads in the archives. These situations can have very happy endings!

congrats! i got rejected from my top choice too but after visiting my other schools, i surprisingly found that i really love one of my match/semi safety schools over my second choice. the downfall is that it offered me the worst financial aid out of all my schools....

Last year, I got rejected from all the elites/top choices and ended up at my safety/state school. Well I ended up loving it here, and I honestly do think I'm happier here than I would have been at any of my top choices. There are also far more smart people and challenging classes here than I thought there would be.

congrats man! Michigan is surely a great school. Michigan does have a chance of going to National Championships next year though, Mike Hart will be a strong canidate for Heisman.

Got rejected from Hotel School in Cornell (my top choice)
but during the time I was deferred on the ED round, I really wanted to go to Cornell but was hesitant about studying as a hotel major.
Now I'm going to WashU's olin b-school and I'm so happy that I didn't need to go to Cornell's hotel program (too much food and beverage courses) haha
I cant wait!!!

I applied to a few reach schools based on the fact that other people wanted me to--guidance counselor, extended family--and I've always counted my blessings for being rejected. They were schools that I wouldn't have been as happy at, but also from which I probably wouldn't have been able to turn down acceptances. Thank you, admissions, for knowing I didn't belong there :)

CMU was one of my favorites also, but I'm glad I got rejected from Yale and Brown and the likes. I think everything in the college process has worked out quite well.
