I found out Harvard considers me a minority

My parents are trying to get me to apply to Ivies so we can get financial aid, but I've been skeptical of them. However, now that I am considered a URM, I think I may well consider applying for as many as possible.

I am Algerian, and yesterday commenters here said i would count as white. For you Asians out there, if you are not the most common brand of asian, there is hope! Though I'm guessing the vast majority of Asian applicants are Han Chinese or Korean.

Wait, I don’t get it; Algerians aren’t Caucasian?

apparently not. Maybe they look past ethnicity and into nationality too.

btw I know this because I emailed their URM admissions person. I have competitive stats and this might help me get in.

if you are algerian, you are considered caucasian

personally i would love to see this made up admissions email from harvard

Yes, you do count as a minority in our process, if you received this email!

Best,
Kema

Good enough? Geez, some people think everyone is a liar.

hmm so would they consider a half japanese, half korean dude to be an URM?

I’m just saying, he just said “minority” not “under-represented minority.” There is a difference.

Hmmm, I get what you mean, but this is from the recruitment peeps. Maybe it holds some weight. Either way, I just wanted to get this cleared up.

I wish you the best of luck, and won’t bother encumber you with any other information, experience or knowledge. Carry on.

Of course you’re a minority. URM is an entirely different boat.

Being a minority is probably of some slight advantage just because it helps schools build some twisted vision of “diversity” that is defined by ethnicity.

That being said, you’re not an under represented minority.

I got an email from Harvard as well regarding minority recruitment. I’m 100% Korean.

It seems a bunch of people got this email. I think it may be fake?

I got that same E-Mail, and am Oriental Asian.

I almost sent back a rude response out of anger.

This is just the “Undergraduate Minority Recruitment Program,” so it doesn’t imply under-represented, as I have also gotten it and I am Asian. It’s not fake; look on the Harvard website and you’ll see the link to it.

Is Slavic considered a URM?

You’re excited to be an ORM?
