I know this is an old story, but the student backlash against the taser incident really bothered me. I believe that the kid deserved what he got, but everyone here seems to disagree with me. Plus, ive found CA to be quite dif than the environment that im used to, so ive decided to transfer as soon as possible. That is, unless, someone can convince this worried freshmen otherwise....

You'll find that jump-the-gun-rebel-without-a-cause mentality whatever school you go to. I think ever since Vietnam, students think they have the right and responsibility to bring social change, very radical point of view. Okay, I'll get off my soapbox now.

one incident and you're done with ucla?

well, not everyone is going to agree on the issue...but so what if ppl on here disagree with you? just all opinions...listen to them, respond to them, ignore them, but don't stress out.

and did you visit UCLA before you decided to come here? if you did, ok. if not, obviously it was a mistake to attend here without getting a feel for the environment, especially when you're OOS. big risk.

and we can't really convince you if you don't list what your worries are....(please tell me it isn't just this tasering incident)

i think both the student and the officer were equally at fault. the student HAD to make a scene and make it about race. its a known policy to check IDs at random. just because you're brown or black or white or yellow or green or pink doesnt mean that they targeted you specifically because if your color. i'm sorry, but you're not that special. if someone were to pick at random someone from a crowd to give a prize to, no one would complain they got picked because they were [insert color here].

also the cop was said to have a history of being "trigger happy".

but seriously. dont let that one incident make you transfer out. the world is filled with people that disagree with you. maybe you should live on mars? now, if you honestly believe UCLA was a wrong choice for you for various other reasons, then that's another story. where are you from originally and how exactly is CA/UCLA different that what you're used to?

lots of people disagreed with the kid...I think you just haven't talked to the "right" people....even though the cop was "trigger happy" the kid got what he deserved...he was asked to show a student ID (let's remember, he was not special) he should have...he declined and paid the price. I bet the students who held the rallies and protests didn't even know much about the case and just wanted to jump the "abusive cops want to keep down the _____ minorities" bandwagon....he was a muslim so a big deal was made (this doesn't mean that islamophobia is a not a serious issue in the US today, it is but the taser incident had nothing to do with it) and you got the usual placard-holding "party."

At least, there was some excitement on the campus

and if you want to transfer out just because of this incident.....well, here's another one

please don't leave ucla based on this one incident. btw, you can't really judge how liberal a school is based on a college visit. and you'll find that every college has its conservative, moderate, and liberal elements, so please don't leave for this reason.

i thought the kid deserved what he got.

There are tons of people who agree with you (just look at facebook groups) - they're probably just not as vociferous, because they're not the ones protesting anything.

If you are not used to living in a big city or urbanized area, then by all means go somewhere else where you think you'll flourish and be more happy. Leave right away, otherwise the concrete jungle will eat you alive. UCLA and Los Angeles, in general, is full of pretentious individuals who are only looking out for themselves. In comparison, New Yorkers or people who have lived a significant amount of time in NYC, in general, tend to be more themselves, forthright and don't put up a false air about themselves. If you ever visit/live in NYC you'll clearly see the difference of what I am referring to.

There's always going to be a "mob" type mentality wherever you live as it seems to be the case with the taser incident. It's your choice whether or not you get caught up in it. Keep in mind that those indirectly involved with the taser incident are only voicing out opinions. Those same opinions aren't any more valid than yours regardless of what the "majority" thinks. You can disagree with others but your dispostion doesn't have to be disagreeable. Stick to what you believe is right and surround yourself with individuals who will support you, have the same beliefs, or goal(s) for that matter. This will help you get through your moments of doubt.

Lol isnt NYC the world capital of people looking out for themsleves and being rude to strangers?

Taser thing lasted 2 wks.. everyones forgotten about it. you can too. any big school has a liberal bent. but i actually think UCLA is pretty conservative overall.

Transferring because a school isn't a good fit for you is fine, but transferring because of one stupid, over-hyped incident is a little silly. That incident doesn't define ucla. I highly, highly suggest finishing out the year before you even consider transferring. You've got to give a school more than 2 1/2 months.

shastarasta,

If you transfer out over one little "event" on-campus, you'll have a hard time fitting in anywhere. If you don't fit in, then transfer for your own sake. Otherwise, remember that every school has its lumps.
