I am a Linguistics major with a French minor, a certificate in W. European studies and another tentative minor in Italian (not sure about that one yet). I basically planned out my schedule for the next two years with all the classes that fulfil major/minor/certificate/general ed reqs. IF scheduling permits, I will be able to finish everything within 2 years. This includes one summer course and a possible summer study abroad program. Do you think I am rushing it? By the way, I would be taking 18 credits during the academic year for the next two years....6 credits one summer and 7 credits the next summer. DO you think I am rushing it and have two many additional concentrations? I plan to be working when I am not in school and once I finally finish, I want to go straight to grad school in the fall.

As long as you're comfortable with your course load, than I don't think you're over doing it. Kudos for having it all planned out and even finding a way to put in a summer abroad.

bonafide20 I think that you have a good plan ;-)!

Do you go to Georgetown?

Just try not to take 2 different language courses in the same semester, can get confusing.

no general education requirements or other pre-req's?

yeah there are gen eds but I have tried to work them in with still being able to do all the other stuff I want to do or at least have them relevant to my studies. Example: I am not into science, but I have to take 2 of them...I picked a chem class designed for "non-scientists" and there is no lab! Also, I hve to take a history course...I'm minoring in French, so I will take the history of modern France. By the way, I dont go to Gtown :)

Here is my plan for the next two years. BTW, I am already aware that I will more than likely have to make adjustments and I may even HAVE to stay another semester or if worst comes to worst, a year (the latter I really and truly hope I can avoid) Currently spending a year abroad so I will not include this coming spring..

summer 05 (6 credits)
6-week Intensive Hungarian
work upon return, until school starts
study for GRE...a bit at a time

fall 05 (18 credits)
continue studying a little bit at a time for GRE
Morphology
Intro to Creative Writing
Chem for Non-Scientists OR Science of Musical Sounds
Modern France 1
Written French 1 (OR Intermediate 1 or 2...depends on how I place when I return from France)
Intermediate Italian I
--I know that may be confusing taking FR & ITAL, but I dont think I'll be okay--

WINTER BREAK
may go to France during the break to take an intensive course offered in the winter...not for credit, but for personal benefit. definitely don't wanna be home!

spring 06 (18 credits)
study more intensely for GRE...if there is a last minute prep course, MAY do that if I have time....then, take GRE
Phonology
Minds & Machines
Contemporary Issues in Public Policy OR Sensation & Perception OR Natural Sciences 1
Written French 1 or 2 (again depending on how I placed before) OR Inermediate French 2
Pidgeons & Creole Languages
Intermediate Italian 2

summer 06 (7 credits)
MIGHT do study abroad in Italy in which I would take:
Italian Conversation
Culture of Renaissance Florence
Literary French 1
IF I need to re-take the GRE, I will study for it intensely over the summer and probably enroll in a course when I come back from Italy
will also be working when I come back if all goes well

fall 06 (18 credits)
do some last minute studying for GREs IF I need to retake them, then retake them hopefully for the last time...then, its time to prepare grad school apps/scholarships, etc
Aspects of Sociolinguistics
Research Methods in Applied Linguistics (grad course)
Approaches to French Literature (unless I can take a French lit course here)
either Russia & the West (Honors) and 1 of the following: Roman History OR Comparative European History....OR both of the last two courses and NOT the honors course.
French Stylistics
Big Maybe: Literary Italian 1 (IF I did NOT study abroad in summer) OR Literary Italian 2 (IF I DID study abroad)---but only if I am NOT taking both lits at the same time

WINTER BREAK
May go away again just to relax. Wil probably need to put the finishing touches on any left over apps/scholarships, etc for grad school.

spring 07 (13 to 16 credits)
Syntax
Applications of Linguistics
French Conversation AND / OR French Phonetics (I may take both at the same time or just one...depends on how I am feeling!)
Chinese & Western Poetry
Italian Conversation (just to keep speaking Italian...this is only 1 credit and can be taken even if I went abroad)

then, hopefully, GRADUATION!!!!

Then, spend the summer working and preparing for grad school....possibly attend a summer institute of linguistics.

So, now that you know my life's plan in vivid, what do you think?

BTW, after all of that blood, sweat, and tears, I will have emerged a Linguistics Major, and Double Minor in French & Italian with a Certificate in W. European Studies. We'll see if I can handle the effort without quitting any of them. Ihope to graduate with AT LEAST a 3.8 gpa and I hope I can at least break 600 each on the m/v of the GRE but I stink at standardized tests so I am a bit worried....

When I finally finish, I would be going to grad school for a terminal MA (at this point, unsure about PhD afterwards) in Linguistics and will narrow my list of the following schools down to probably 10 at most: Cambridge, Oxford, McGill, Toronto, Cornell, Chicago, Indiana, Penn, Boston, NYU, Northweatern, UMass-Amherst & Ohio State (maybe...they normally only accept PhD seekers but sometimes make exceptions), Washington, Delaware, Oregon, IL-Urbana Champaign, UGA

There are many reaches in my list but I am hoping I will be able to stand out in some way on my app.

Areas of Interests:
Romance Linguistics
Phonetics
Sociolinguistics
Historical Linguistics
Bilingualism/Multilingualism (including 2nd language acquisition)

Goals afterwards:
Not sure...I know I am not interested in teaching. Maybe do research....traveling...translation....I dunno...anything but teaching!

Just thought I would mention these things to add more fuel to the fire. So now that you know everything there is to know....what do you think now? Do you still think the plan is okay? do you think I may be overdoing it? You think I would be prepared for grad school if I put myself thru all this? You think I will even have time to do everythign I want in two years?

:)
