Is this score decent/good enough for University of British Columbia?
Probably not, even if you have a super high GPA/good EC’s.
It’s ranked #36th in the world, that is really high. A 1230 on the new SAT is very very low. Probably not even a state school would accept you (unless it’s a really low quality state school).
Not trying to put you down, but there is no way you are getting into a world class university with a 1230 SAT.
A 1230 out of 1600 is not very very low. And, as a first attempt its not bad. Take it again. A state school would definitely take you please do not be concerned.
From Colleges Simply:
Is a 1230 on the SAT a good score? Yes, a 1230 is quite good. It places you in approximately the 79th percentile nationally for all students who took the SAT.
Maybe not for British Columbia but definitely a state school.
Canadian universities care primarily about grades and admit based on program. I would say that your SAT score, while somewhat low for UBC, does not put you out of the running. This is mostly my intuition based on my knowledge of UBC and Canadian universities, but varied sources (mostly sketchy) seem to place the cutoff at 1200/1600 or 1600/2400. As long as you have good or very good grades (depending on the program you apply to), you could definitely still be admitted – you should look at UBC’s website to see what to aim for.
Side note: poster #1 is full of it.
I am just telling the truth. A kid ain’t going to get into a top 40 international college with a 1230 SAT, unless he is a valedictorian with extremely good EC’s.
Also, OP just posted this a few hours ago in another thread
He said that just a few hours ago, which is strange cause yesterday afternoon he said it was 1230 (which I assume is his score for the 1/21 that came out yesterday morning). Seems quite odd.
He shouldn’t have trouble with a state school, depending on what state he is from. But he is asking about a top 40 international university, in which case the SAT score is relatively low.
High school students with threads about low SAT scores advising high school students with threads about low SAT scores…
Just take advice with a grain of salt, OP, that’s all.
@RMNiMiTz that is an interesting inconsistency. However, your initial post said that “probably not even a state school would accept” OP, which – as you noted in your second post – is not correct at all. You also said that OP’s SAT score wouldn’t be good enough “even if [they] have a super high GPA”, which, again, I disagree with and your second post refuted.
I agree with your second post, although I think you may be overestimating the meaning of “top 40 international university” given how admissions work in Canada (nearly entirely grades-based).
Yea I get get the irony. But then again, I ain’t trying to go to a top tier international university either. From my POV, if a person gets 150 points lower than me on the SAT, and I have a practical 0% chance of getting into my state flagship school, I doubt that he is getting into one of the best universities in Canada.
Well, again it depends on what state school. Arizona perhaps but probably not Texas. I can’t tell the nationality of OP (but I would assume American if he is doing SAT instead of the Canadian exams). I would figure that he may need a better standardized test score to stand out to the Canadian admissions.
Statistally speaking difficult, but Harvard has accepted students with similar stats. Granted 12% of pool are recruited athletes, but it has happened.
Depends on what differentiates you from the applicant pool. If you know the standardized scores are low, build up the remaining package.
As others have said, retake the SAT/ACT and focus on it.
