I got a C in H. Precalc?

I have always been so careful not to get any C’s in high school but now that my junior year is over, I got my report card and found out that I got a C in my Honors Precalc class. I am so angry with myself because I don’t get C’s. My GPA is now a 3.25! I want to apply to:
The university of Maryland - College Park
The university of Minnesota - Twin Cities
The university of Seattle - Washington
I have been talking to my college counselors before I found out that I got a C and I was wondering if it was a good idea to talk to them about it. This whole junior year has been really hard because we had some passings in the family and I couldn’t really focus do you think they would understand? Should I call them about it?

Absolutely talk to your GC. They should be the ones to tell the collgeges in the evals what the problem is. One exception if it was an immediate family member. Even then, it may be something to mention directly in addition to the GC mentioning but has to be done carefully. As a caution, death of a grandparent is rarely a good essay topic but there are always exceptions.

Sorry about your losses.

Can you talk to the teacher? Explain what happened and why? Go over your scores to make sure everything was averaged correctly?

Well, I got two C’s sophomore year in H Precalc and H Chem and I have UMD as a safety. Right now at the end of my junior year I have a 3.7. One C is really not that bad, as I had two and was told my chances were good for schools such as Wake Forest and Bucknell. The part where your gpa is a 3.25 after only one C is kinda questionable. You might want to have that recalculated because if you had all A’s and B’s besides that one C, you should not have a 3.25 because that is kinda terrible. But as far as colleges go, UMD-CP might be a stretch with that GPA, but you will be competitive at the other two schools depending on your test scores.

^^^If you’ve been getting A’s with a couple of B’s, one C in an Honors class won’t give you a 3.25. You do need to recalculate.

As someone who got a C+ in sophomore year for Honors Pre-calc, let me just say you’re not alone and that class is hard AF. Don’t worry too much about your chances at those schools because of it though, one bad grade will not ruin your chances for good. If you’ve been maintaining all the rest of your grades, it’ll be okay. You’re human. College admissions know that. One C+ isn’t going to stop me from applying to my reach schools. Best of luck!

It depends on what you want to major in. If you want to throw away some money for something like an English degree it wont matter but if you plan to go into the sciences the fact that you got a C in a math class that doesn’t even require that much problem solving and reasoning will stand out. Plus if you got a C in precal chances are you wont make anything above a D in calc when you have to actually apply things and not just regurgitate memorized formulas.

Call who? Counselors can’t change grades because of circumstances.
All you can do now is focus on your next math course and do your best to ace it. If you’re taking calc next year, get an A in it, show that pre-calc was a fluke and that you have the potential to succeed academically.
