I took the SAT this morning, and after I finished one section, I tried to go back to the beginning of the section, but accidentally flipped one page over. Unfortunately, the proctor was just behind my back, and before I turned the page back to my section she "caught me cheating." So she gave me a warning. She wouldn't let me explain, and because I was in the middle of testing, I didn't want to spend 10 minutes explaining to her about how I just accidentally over-flipped, and I thought that since it was only a warning it probably didn't matter. Now that I'm all done, I just started to think about it--would this warning have an effect on my score report or anything? I mean, she kind of said that she won't make them cancel my score (which was why I thought it was no big deal while taking the test), but are they going to put on my score report something like "this student tried to flip back to a previous section and we gave him a warning" or something? Please help!!! I don't need to send this score because I already had all my previous scores sent (I'm a senior), but I'm sure I did super-good on this exam. I felt so ****ed because I really didn't do anything! But if it's going to affect me anyhow, I'm going to try to either cancel the score or call the test center up to explain or something, so please help me fast! Thanks!

I don't think you should worry about it too much. If the proctor said she wasn't going to cancel your score then she probably won't write a report either.

She probably didn't really say it...I forgot. I wasn't really focused on what she was saying because I was concentrating so hard and stressing out for the exam. She probably just said something like "we found that you were looking back to previous sections...this is a warning." And I probably just didn't freak out about it because it was "just a warning." But at the end, she didn't ask for my name (though I'm pretty sure she knows it; I'm the only Brown guy in the room so she probably could have told even if she didn't know), and she put my test together with other people's. I just really wanted to make sure that she actually won't say anything about it, because "cheating on the SAT" or cheating on anything is kind of a big deal to colleges, and I especially don't want them to think badly of me for this because I absolutely did not cheat. And I did especially well on this one SAT although previous ones were okay too. But I had a decent score on my previous SATs and I wouldn't risk sending this in if there's any notable risk of doing so.

That said, do you all think I should maybe wait till the scores get to me before I send them off to colleges? In that case I guess not every college would take it because it would probably be later, but then I could see my score report. And I suppose the same report that I see gets sent to my colleges? Thanks for the help, and sorry if I sound like I'm making a big deal out of nothing...I might just be overly nervous.

Could somebody pleeeze reply? If you think it's no big matter, please say so...I really want to make sure so I can feel better...

it depends on what she said. if she said it's a warning, then you should be fine.

all we can do is guess. there's really no one on this forum besides yourself who can tell what she said and how she said it. but from what you wrote, sounds like she was just warning and isn't going to take action.

Thanks lawlzatyou. She said that it was a warning and didn't mention anything about taking actions, or else I'm sure I would have freaked out at the moment. Throughout the whole thing she never said a thing about taking action.

P.S. If I wait till I get my score report, would the score report they send to me be the same one as the one they sent to colleges? Because if that's the case, then I guess I can just wait.

Based on this document from CollegeBoard, and from what you've described, I suspect your scores won't be canceled.

And based on this article, if your scores are canceled, you shouldn't worry about what the colleges will see.
SAT, ACT cheats face no penalty - Los Angeles Times

I accidentally started to use my calculator in a non-calculator section of an AP exam last year and got issued a warning but it was ok

Thanks!
geek_mom, thanks for your info, that really helped!
So, I guess the common opinion is that I shouldn't contact anyone or clarify to anyone. I don't really care that much if they cancel my score, because I already had all my past scores sent and stuff. But I really don't want them to ruin my reputation based on something that I never did.

And, can anyone answer my question if the score report that I receive (i.e. see online) would be the same that colleges see? For example, they won't put nothing on the one that I see and then tell the colleges they suspect a misconduct? Because I wanted to make 100% sure that things are going to be fine. I can wait until I get the score report before I send it--I mean, really, I had a good enough score last time, I was just so needing things to do (not really =P) that I took it again. But I don't really need this score, and if they cancel the score I don't really care all that much, but if there's no risk for them to report this to colleges whatsoever then I won't cancel my score because I think I did better.

Again, thanks you all for reading my post and providing such helpful information promptly!

Typo...When I said "but if there's no risk for them to report this to colleges" I meant reporting the "suspected misconduct" and not the scores.

P.S. I was also thinking that if they are going to do something about this suspected thing they should probably notify me and give me the chance to clarify right? Not just put it on there...

The College Board will NEVER report cheating to colleges. Even if you gave a friend a fake ID with your picture, and paid him 5000 to take the test for you, and the proctor figured out your scheme, the CB would just cancel your score. Colleges would never know you even registered for the SAT that day, and you could still sign up the next month. Sweet deal, right?

but in your case, your score won't even be canceled because you were just warned. if your scores were going to be canceled, you would have been asked to leave in the middle of the test. you weren't asked to leave, so there's nothing to worry about.

Relax. I've proctored the PSAT as a volunteer and they were pretty plain about what constituted "flipping" -- as in flipping forward or backward and working on that section. If you had told her to "FXXX off" or she had seen you continue to work on that page, then she would have been required to pick up your exam and excuse you from the room. I'll bet she kept her beady eyes on you quite a bit to make sure you were behaving. (And, hopefully, you were). Believe it or not, we (proctoring sorts) are rooting for you. We hope you strut your stuff and the schools get to see the best that you can do.

Thanks for your response...yeah I behaved the rest of the time. Although the proctor probably thought that I was working on the other section the time she "caught" me because I was really confused--it was toward the end of the section and my brain was not functioning well--and so I kind of stared at the page for 2 sec without realizing that I over-flipped (people who took the SAT who's ever looked back after finishing the end of a forever-long section prob. knows how I felt) and she touched my back and I looked at her and looked at the section number and was like "oh crap." But I definitely did behave without flaw later and she didn't say anything about taking any actions. So hopefully that's okay.

I probably should relax a little bit...my mind's all worked up today...so sorry if my redundancy bothers you all. SAT's freak me out all the time, especially when messy stuff like this happens. It makes me have this "I just got into bad trouble without doing anything and I can't defend myself" feeling. Now I'm done rambling, and I feel much better because of all your support here!

You will likely be fine.

Even if the CB decides that you cheated, which is unlikely under the circumstances, the worst that would likely happen is an inconvenient retake and a lengthy score delay.

I don't think it's an issue at all Since there was no formal report of the incident.

Thanks! I just figured that if they are doing something about it they should at least give me a chance to appeal or explain or at least tell me what is going on. So since none of that is happening, I'm probably just going to chill until the score report comes out and then after making sure they didn't cancel it send it after that.

kitty -- No. Don't lose your free score reports over this. If they cancel the score, they will send /nothing/ to your colleges. As if you had never taken the test at all. So the only thing you gain by waiting is... the opportunity to give CB another $9.50 per college.

Thanks to all! I think I will send the reports now then. No waiting. Thanks!
