I got accepted to vt! Should I go?

So I applied to Virginia Tech as a Math major and got accepted. But people tell me that it’s better to go to a community college first. I think that would be a good decision too because I don’t really know if I should major in math. So going to NoVa community college would help me decide my major and that too with low cost ( They both teach the same thing in the first 2 years anyways) So where should I go?
I’d appreciate any help!
Thanks in advance

There is no one answer to this question. Some factors to consider:

  1. One of the biggest considerations is cost: will paying for college put you in a lot of debt? If so, then starting out in CC can obviously be a way to save significantly on tuition.
  2. What you want out of a college experience. While CC can provide a good education, the campus life will be quite different than that of a school like VT. If a "real" college experience is important to you and cost is not a significant factor, then attending a four-year school from the beginning is probably the better choice.
  3. Do you want to be around mostly motivated students? At a CC you will find a mixed bag of students. Some will be highly motivated and attending CC mainly for financial reasons. Others will barely show up and will seem to care less about the idea of an education. Some people would find that environment frustrating.

One of the good things about a large university like Virginia Tech is that it offers many majors, so if you decide to change your mind you will likely not have to transfer. And you will be taking a lot of general ed classes your first two years, just like at a CC, so changing your mind is not likely to have much of an impact on your ability to finish in four years.

I think you have to weigh the factors above and make your own decision. A word of caution: be careful about advice from fellow high school seniors. While well-intended, their advice might not be based on the best information. Ask your GC, teachers, etc.

First of all thank you so much for your detailed response! And your points are really thought provoking , I’ll definitely look into these.
Thank you once again!
