Hi! I'm new here and I know that results came out like a month ago, but I thought I'd hit up this site to see if anybody's in a similar situation.
I got deferred and I'm really surprised they didn't just go ahead and reject me but hey.

Would it be smart to send an extra letter or something to the admissions office? I don't anticipate achieving anything spectacular in the next few months, so that's probably off the list. But if I wrote a letter explaining in-depth why I want to go to Columbia, would it hurt my chances?

Also, does anybody know if deferred people often are accepted in the regular pool? Gosh, sorry for all the questions, I guess I'm just still really down about this.

They do occasionally accept deferred applicants during regular admissions - it’s rare, but it does happen. I would recommend that you send a letter to the admissions counselor for your region affirming that Columbia is still your first choice and that you would definitely go there if accepted.

I would also recommend that you keep your grades high during senior year. If you’ve done well in the quarter or semester since you applied, send in an updated transcript, as well.

Best of luck!

"you would definitely go there if accepted. "

Watch out for this. I’ve read that admissions at top universities hear this all the time, and then it doesn’t happen, so it’s a phrase that won’t carry much weight.

However, no harm in sending in 7th semester grades and sending an e-mail/letter reaffirming interest and possibly telling about any new senior year activities/achievements.
