Hello,
I got deferred from columbia, but I really want to go there. My grades have stayed pretty consistent (one 93 in ap physics b during my second quarter, but i got a 98 first quarter), I have a few updates that aren't too substantial, and I visited china over break. In a couple weeks, I am visiting new york again to see a professor.

Anyway, i'm currently writing my deferral letter. But, from what I am hearing, it is really difficult to get accepted to an Ivy after being deferred.

Can someone honestly tell me how likely it is for me to be accepted there? Is there anything else i can do to maximize my chances? Could I make some sort of a cute art supplement to make me stand out (like a booklet or something), or would that be obnoxious?

I personally think if you did conjure an art supplement, it would only be detrimental to you as it would portray your desperation. However the basis of my statement is my assuming that this art supplement would be decorated in Columbia regalia and emblems. if not, go for it and send it to them only if you do it without your current motivation as things should be genuine. Assuming your stats are atypical of other applicants, your deferral is actually advantageous to you as it illustrates your desire to be in Columbia. Just out of curiosity, what are you looking to major in?

“But, from what I am hearing, it is really difficult to get accepted to an Ivy after being deferred.”

It’s really difficult to get accepted to an Ivy after you hit the “submit” button on your application.

We get the disappointment from CU not saying “YES” to your first app. But the fact is some kids do get eventually accepted who were initally deferred. When I attended my Ivy alma mater, I couldn’t tell you who was an early admit, an admitted deferee, a regular admit or an admit off the waitlist. We didn’t know or care.

In reality, your chance is about equal to the remaining RD pool – which you should know is very low – but that’s the reality for everyone. These are the last few months of your successful HS career. Why are you being glum? Go out with a bang. Trust me: whatever college prints your diploma in 5 years isn’t going to make/break you.

Should you give up on Columbia? IMHO, yes, let it go. Theses days, your chances are better in the early round, even taking into account all the recruited athletes, legacies and URM’s. As T26E4, suggested, your chances are now equal to the remaining RD pool – which are very low. Take heart though: Not all top colleges are looking for the same things. Just because one top college deferred you doesn’t mean that another top college will not accept you. You need to make peace with the fact that you will probably be going to college someplace else. And that’s ok!

It’s never over till its over. But like T26E4 and gibby said, there’s nothing else you can do at this point. Go and enjoy the rest of your HS life cause it’ll be over in no time. Cherish those friends you’re leaving and finish with a bang:)
I kind of know what you are going thru, my son got deferred from Princeton and he was disappointed but has continued to do other things. Was just invited from Rice to attend Vision 2014 and flying to Houston next weekend, something that wasn’t even in his radar. Go on, finish your second semester, plan for your finals, senior prom and graduation…Your next school will fall on your lap at this point:)) The best of luck to you

teszzz, I totally get you. I have the same problem. I LOVE LOVE LOVE Columbia, so I applied ED, and was deferred. I wasn’t exactly disappointed, knowing that only 20% of the applicants get accepted, 20% deferred, and the rest gets REJECTED. Now, I have to be practical with myself, so I am trying to love other schools as well. The only problem is the “other” school that I fell in love with has an acceptance rate of 5%…Macaulay Honors at Hunter. It feels like everything is going downhill. Another problem I have is that I constantly worry about which college I should attend. Columbia for 240K or Macaulay for 0K? And then I remember that I haven’t been accepted to either of them yet. LOL. Don’t give up on anything. Don’t expect anything. Just let it be. We are second semester seniors now anyway. All the best!

^^“And then I remember that I haven’t been accepted to either of them yet. LOL” Best line I’ve read in awhile! I’m a parent with a degree in Engr. and and MBA from a top school. And I go down that same path for my kids sometimes. Oh bother. Don’t count your chickens before they are hatched. I hope both of your have schools on your plates that are financially feasible and will stimulate your brains (trust me, you don’t have to go to an Ivy to get your academic behind kicked in college).
