I got in by a thread!

This might be a lengthy post!

Well by the grace of god i some how managed to get in and let me tell you this crazzy story.

We all know that UT and A&M are the top public schools in the state. My eyes were set on UT from the get go when i entered high school and i had all the grades to get in as well. My junior year i transferred from my public high school to a 2 year charter high school called the Richland collegiate high school for math science and engineering or almost the same thing as TAMS at UNT, where you do your junior and senior year of high school as a freshman and sophomore in college. Keep in mind these are pretty good programs with a pretty good reputation of having bright kids. I graduated from the program in may of 09 with both HS and associates degree accumulating about 76 hours during that time. In april i received word that i had been give the CAP offer along with many of my other fellow classmates due to the retarded top 10% rule and the fact that we weren't in the category of public high schools. My graduating class had 130 kids so there was not an official rank given so many of the kids were CAPed and rejected which made everyone ****ed because we had school portfolios that would sweep half the kids that got in. I chose to instead take the cap offer but a little bit tweaked since i had already completed all the cap courses back at my college/ high school program so mike washington assigned me a contract stating i could take any 30 transferable hours and make a 3.2 any college of my choice and i would accepted for fall 2010. So decided UT San Antonio partly because i wanted to leave dallas. So the first semester i took 15 hours and half way along the semester one of the classes i had registered for was incorrect so i was attending the wrong class for weeks and when i tried to attend the rigth class the professor said i would fail soi withdrew from the class leaving me with 12 hours. Then due to me having hand surgery a couple months before i had to drive to dallas during the weekdays for physical therapy and other procedures done thus having to skip alot of classes. I had fallen behind in two of my classes sooi took two medical incompletes which basically meant that they would put an I in for the grade until i retook the classes in spring semester and replaced those grade in the fall for letter grades. So that left me with only 6 hours worth of classes that i had grades for. So i had to make a decision whether i wanted UT or not because i would have to take 8 classes or a 24 hour course load in order to complete my thirty hours for my acceptance. I tried to see if i could have some leniency from UT under the certain circumstances but they denied my request so i basically said screw it soo i went for it. I took 24 hours this past spring semester and worked my butt off, keep in mind these are mostly upper division classes since i was a junior at the time. As the semester was was coming to a close i calculated what i had to make on the finals to pull the grades to make a 3.2 and i was coming short with about 3.17 due to the fact that alot of the classes i was taking i had no chance of making an A which meant a B at best which really made me depressed even through all the effort i put in of taking on this courseload. Some how i ended up coming out with 3 a's 6 b's and 1 c which came out to be 3.2 on the dot with nothing rounded or anythign of that nature. I was so stressed after finals week with the anticipation of my grades i literally went crazzy and went into depression thinking my life was over if i didnt make my 3.2. I had to email professors informing them of my situation and begging for a's and none of them gave me any lee way except one and i ended up gettin an A which let to my admissions. After all that i dont know how i did it, aferr 8 finals and a hectic semester i got in by a thread and at times i wanted to give up but i didnt and i made it! so for those of you having second thoughts due to some extenuating circumstance, put your mind to it and don't deter from your goal because i am not a proud LONGHORN!

Omigosh…Congrats soccer_playa1579, but you better learn about paragraphs before hitting that campus in the fall! In any case, best of luck to you.

CONGRATS! that is insane. Just another reason the top 10% rule needs to go IMO.

CONGRATULATIONS!! People like you are the reason UT shines so bright. I’m so excited for your bright future.

HOOK 'EM!

C o n g r a t u l a t i o n s ! ! !

Thats awesome, congrats!

Good job!

Lol 24 hours… crazy. Congrats, well deserved.

Great job! Congrats!!!

I’m glad for you an all, but why should any professor change a grade out of pity? Isn’t that unfair to the other students? Do you think all students should ‘ask’ for a higher grade if the ending grade isn’t ‘good enough’?

Congrats!

And I agree with mimimomx3. It’s really not fair to all the other students.

I assumed he was either border line in the class or did extra credit.

Hell, they should take initiative (like the OP did) if they need that grade so bad.

And no, I have never asked a teacher to bump up my grade.

I am just really happy to hear that in the end, this turned out well, and I hope soccer playa has a great fall at UT.

The time to ‘take the initiative’ is #1, verifying that you’re in the correct class and #2, studying for your tests. Guilt tripping a professor is childish and inappropriate.

Thanks everyone! and in regards to the professor giving me an A, I was sitting at an 89.4 for the final grade so I had to atleast make an effort to see what could be done. I kind of exaggerated the whole asking every professor for an A but to the ones where i borderlined that mark. I know that asking to be handed a grade you didn’t deserve is wrong but after such a semester i couldn’t not try because it determined my future and i know if you were in my position you would do what was necessary to at least put forth an effort to see what was done. I had hand surgery due to parental abuse and that was more than I could take at that time in my life and under the circumstances I couldn’t settle for 2nd so i did what i had to do to get in.

yes i know i apologize for not putting it into paragraphs.

Oh please.

There really isn’t that much a difference at all between the work required to get an 89.4 and a 90.

The OP essentially got an A, he did the work, get over it.

^^ There is a difference, lockdown22. What about an 89.2? 89? 88? Where do you draw the line?

OP, glad to hear you exagerated. In the ‘real world’, your boss, customers, competitors will very rarely feel sorry for you and give you anything you don’t deserve.

Best of luck with everything- sounds like you learned a valuable lesson.

I"d say that as long as it isn’t asking for over a point added, there is nothing wrong with that at all.

And hey, it worked, that’s all that matters in the end.
