I got in with a 3.13 gpa

1910 SAT, in-state, white, mediocre extracurriculars (I had 5 but all of them were kind of eh -- GSA, literary magazine, two volunteer activites together totalling 140 hours, and "independent readings and research"). I just don't really get it. I know some really hardworking people from my school who were rejected or waitlisted (one was in student government, one had like 750 hours of community service), and saw someone who had a 3.92 gpa who was waitlisted.

I just think it's a little unfair. I'll admit it: I'm lazy. They're not, and they wanted this a whole lot more than I did. I guess my essays must have been really kickass or something, because it really doesn't make sense. I'm not first generation, either.

I'm a full time RS student and have been junior+senior years, and my cumulative gpa at the college is 3.5. Better than first two years of high school, but community college is somewhat of a joke and my college GPA's still less than the average of admitted freshmen.

What's going on this year with UW? I honestly would give up my admission slot for some of the people I know of who didn't get in.

I can see where you’re coming from. My GPA isn’t spectacular either (3.3 UW), but I did have other stuff to back it up like a good ECs, great essays, and AP classes (I’d like to think they’re good at least), and people from my school with better GPAs got waitlisted or denied, maybe their ECs or essays weren’t good, but it’s still surprising to see. I’ve gotten **** from 2 people who weren’t even denied, but thought I didn’t deserve it as much as other people. But you know what, they’re full of **** because they don’t know what my ECs are, they haven’t read my essays, and don’t know what the UW admissions saw in me that made them want me over others who got rejected. I mean who’s the better judge of whether or not I deserve to get accepted to UW, UW admissions who have seen my whole application and thought about what I can offer the university or random kids at my high school who made their negative opinions solely based off of my GPA? That was kind of a rant…

Haha, yeah those people are just upset. Nobody’s really said that to me or anything, and I was really excited to have gotten in, but I just don’t think I’m more worthy of a spot than some of those other kids, unlike you. It’s not that I have low self esteem, it’s just that I know how hardworking they are and I think people overestimate running start.

I’m going to Western anyway, so I guess that means one more person who was waitlisted gets to go. shrug

Thanks for understanding haha. It’s just frustrating to see people ask me what my GPA is after finding out I got accepted, then talk **** because it’s low, but don’t bother to ask what my essays were like, ECs, or class rigor. They automatically assume colleges throw your app out if your GPA isn’t “good enough.”

And just wondering, why Western over UW?

Well, I visited western to visit a friend, and the atmosphere and feel of the place gives me a better intuitive feeling than UW’s campus. They both have the programs I want, and although UW is more well known and is more academically rigorous (or so it seems), Western doesn’t have 800 student classes, and it’s more outdoorsy and closer to wide open spaces, mountains, and Canada. It also is more of a hippie school and that’s more me.

UW just seems conventional and huge, plus the area is sketchy. Beautiful campus, but I think I’ll fit in more at Western.

I’m not that surprised you were accepted. Being in full time running start is shown to look rigorous to colleges, even though you say it’s a joke, they don’t think that. Your college GPA was just below average for freshman admissions but your SAT’s were great so that kind of made up for it.

Thanks, I guess that makes more sense. You’d think they would know community college is nowhere as rigorous as an equal amount of AP classes.

dude its cause you could practically be considered as a transfer student from CC. And a 3.5 from CC is plenty good for UW. They pretty much just glanced at your HS gpa to make sure it wasnt like below 2.5 cause they saw youre high college gpa. Thats why you got in.

@nietsdoen: I’ve heard that UW likes Running Start students more than AP Students for some reason. That’s probably why they accepted you over the others? Be glad that you received an acceptance letter from them.

I didn’t know they liked RS so much.
