Why was I rejected...????

Ok, I just got rejected from UW but I don't get how people with lower grades got in...

Here were my grades:

gpa: 3.5 uw, 3.9 w
in state
sat:1800
act:27
Extrac: FBLA leader, Key Club, Community Service
Lots of awards from fbla
Job for two years
Worked on essay during summer
Varsity cross country+lacrosse
Asian
5 Aps, 4 honors
...

Ok, i'm not trying to sound racist at all, but I am seriously just appauled because I know two african americans at my school who got with 3.1/3.2 gpa and 1700 SAT and were involved with way less extracurriculars....I just don't get it. I worked so hard and I just end up getting rejected...this is truly disappointing.

:/ sorry…

I have no idea, honestly. Maybe your extracurriculars seemed stereotypical? I know a lot of people who are involved with those clubs/activities. But regardless, it seems like your other stuff sealed the deal. Appeal!

Well your SAT/ACT may not have been high enough to support your GPA. I do not mean to be rude by your stats are somewhat average and being UW, they are more picky. And though I don’t know much, it may be that those African Americans had some kind of previous experience in life that brought them more diversity as well as adding strength to their essay.

Don’t be too upset as UW probably recieved a tremendous amount of applicants this year and are becoming more and more picky. Always try appealing or transferring in later on :)

no offence taken. I know it’s not that high, but what shocks me is that people with lower grades get in and it’s just totally unfair.

Guess I can’t really do too much about it now. I’m gunna have to fall back on my second choice…thank goodness i applied to a lot more schools. It just sucks UW will be crossed off the list. :(

I’m getting mixed messages about UW since i’m hearing contrasting points. The lower GPA people could have gotten in because Uw is looking at the app holistically and are looking for diveristy, but also UW is focusing on people with the best stats since UW is being recognized as a really great school so people with high stats are applying there. So you can see how they contrast. So I would assume that people who were accepted even with low GPA were maybe legacies, diverse in culture/ethnicity, or just had a special exception.

Yeah, UW is a really unpredictable. I know another guy at my school who had 4.0/2000 SAT who just got his rejection letter and man he was upset.

I haven’t gotten an unofficial transcript yet, so I’m guessing I was rejected, but my stats are similar to yours except my ACT is 33 and I have a club presidency, church volunteer, club officership, yearbook editorship, and tennis
oh and I’m out of state
=</p>

I wouldn’t give up yet. Your ACT score of 33 will help tremendously. Keep hope. It’s not over until you get the letter.

It’s really hard to judge whether your own essay is good compared to someone else’s, and I believe that they focus a lot on the essay. An essay might be formally correct but not compelling – nothing there that makes the writer sound like an interesting person who might add something to the community. I think correct-but-boring-essay is what happens a lot with high-achieving perfectionist types who are astonished when they are not accepted.

If it were as easy as choosing the kids with the highest combination of GPA and SATs, admissions could be done by a computer. But they’re trying to build a diverse and energetic community – they need some math wizards and some trombone players and some actresses and some entrepreneurs and some athletes and some public speakers and some people who write gorgeous prose. You can’t necessary build a community like that out of the 5,000 highest-scoring applicants. That’s how people with lower scores get in when people with higher scores don’t – the lower-scoring person had something that the community needed, while the higher-scoring person’s “type” was already well represented.

We haven’t heard yet but I think my daughter has a rather low chance of admittance. If she does get in, it won’t be because of her grades or scores, which are below the 50th %ile of their average accepted scores and grades. It’ll be because her specific ECs and her level of commitment to them were impressive and were needed to fill that niche in the community (but there are a lot of kids with similar ECs – she’s not a particularly unusual type – so I don’t think her chances are too great).

My son was accepted. He is white. a first generation college student, has tons of activities, and has been homeschooled for 12 years, with Running Start credits. We went to an event at the U.W. that explained the admittance process and what the prior poster said about essays is exactly what they said. They also stressed they looked holistically. They suggested making the essay a story, make it interesting, make us laugh or cry. He said they read so many essays that if yours stands out, you have a good chance of getting in. I am sorry you didn’t get in, don’t take it as a reflection of who you are as a person. God has different plans for you so although it is a bummer it will be okay!

@jtrwallace, I think the essay really does play a huge part in their admissions process. Maybe you want to appeal? You have nothing to lose :)

I really dont want this to be mean or sound wrong but basically what everyone else has said. But dude, your test scores and gpa i would say are maybe 30% +/- 5 percent. They dont really care about your past, they care about how you will do in the future. And your gpa really is mediocore anyway. That is about 15th percentile.

Considering I got into University of Florida and just recently, UCLA, I would say 3.5 is hardly a mediocre gpa. I’m not trying to sound pompous, but I just don’t understand how I can get into LA and not UW. Guess i’ll be going out of state :/

Everyone is assigned two numbers, one strictly on their academics, and another on the extra curriculars, essays, etc.
The two are then used to decide who was accepted and who wasn’t.

You got into UCLA? I can see why you’re confused why UW didn’t accept you. But hey, it’s probably their loss. LA is a great school. Congrats!
You can always appeal. If it doesn’t go through, no harm done.

OP- numbers aren’t everything. You don’t know what was on their application, you can’t insinuate it had something to do with their race.

Maybe there were five applicants who had a similar application as you. Who knows how they decide then.

Sorry if I came off a little harsh with the race thing, it just bothered me that I didn’t even get into my state flagship school while some people with lower grades in mine got in and they just happened to be african americans. I’m gunna try and appeal but my parents really want me to go to LA. I’m a little hesitant because it’s so darn expensive.
