I got in!

fallenchemist, yes, I applied EA.

ladydoctor - I would be almost certain they did NOT have her new scores when they made the decision. I would definitely think that it is worth your D sending an e-mail to her admissions counselor. Is Tulane her first choice? If so, then she needs to make this clear to them. What is her new SAT not superscored? That might be what they will go by, although I am not sure on that one way or the other, I have heard conflicting stories on that point. Still, her new SAT almost certainly is an improvement, I would think.

sh1993 - Then you will know by Dec 15. I see that Georgetown seems to be your dream school, yes? If you have stats that make that a real possibility, then you should get into Tulane with merit money, no problem. But this late in the cycle they might not be able to let you know until close to that date, just depends on where you are in “the pile”.

Got my acceptance on Gibson today. I’m really hoping for some merit aid, or else I’ll never be able to go…hahaha.

GPA: 3.7UW 4.0 W
SAT I: 800CR 720M 800W

And I applied SCEA. UGH I am so anxious! LOL.

fallenchemist - The new SAT not superscored is 2070. She will contact her admissions counselor and see what happens. Thanks for the advice and hopefully there will be some merit scholarship money.

ladydoctor - just my opinion, but I think she has a shot at the $15K. Hope so. Good luck!

Rachelmk - You will get merit aid, lol. You have great stats. I would be surprised if you don’t get at least $22K, and I think you have a very good chance for the $25K. With a 2320 SAT and 3.7 UW and I am assuming some decent AP courses, you should try for the DHS (full tuition). It is not too late to get going on that. PM me if you have questions, or you can ask on here if you like.

Thanks! I didn’t get into the honors program at the University of Pittsburgh so I’m feeling a little downtrodden in terms of my chances, hahaha. I’ll look into the DHS for sure.

got in with 15k merit. for those who are curious, 3.5 uw gpa, 32 act. applied ea

My Gibson account updated to accepted last Saturday, and I received my letter in the mail today (I live in Texas) with the 25K Presidential Scholarship and Honors Program offer. I wasn’t expecting such a good offer, but I’m really excited because Tulane is currently my top choice (yet most expensive!)

GPA: 4.0 unweighted/ 4.239 weighted
Rank: 1/78 (small public school)
SAT: CR-800 M-700 W-700
ACT: 33
Dual-Credit Classes and 4 AP classes (my school currently offers only three of them)
And National Hispanic Scholar

If I already marked that I wasn’t going to apply for the DHS on my application does that mean it’s too late for me to change my mind? I’m still uncertain as to whether or not I would have a decent chance.

Xabber - First, congrats on the Presidential! That is excellent. Second, you can absolutely apply for the DHS anyway. Just send an e-mail to your admissions counselor that you decided to apply for it. As far as your chances, IMO you are in the running, although close to the borderline. Grades, class rank obviously cannot be better. Congrats on that! Also you took as rigorous a schedule as your school offered, you will want to make that clear to your admin counselor also. Your test scores are excellent, just a shade below the 2250+ and 34+ ACT that most winners of the DHS have. But there have certainly been winners with 2200 and 33, especially when there are other factors such as your perfect high school record.

Of course, there is the project, recommendations, and EC’s as other variables so that is impossible for me or other CC’ers to comment upon. But if you have the time, you should go for it. Nothing to lose except for the effort, and the potential reward is clearly significant.

Rachelmk - I am very surprised you did not get an invite to the honors program at Pitt. That makes no sense to me, and makes me wonder if it was an oversight on their part. Now of course I cannot see your full record like they can, but still it is a bit baffling. Maybe the stars are starting to line up that you should go to Tulane, lol.

Hey Fallenchemist,

You’re absolutely right. I was referring to the merit based award, not the actual need-based financial aid. If I was notified of my admission to Tulane about a week and a half ago, and I live on the west coast, should I expect to receive my letter today? Hate snail mail :(.

Also, what do you feel my chances at a merit scholarship are- do they factor in variables throughout my high school career? I’ve played primary caretaker to my extremely ill mother for all four years which has hindered my academic record somewhat.

3.6 unweighted, 3.85 weighted, 30 ACT.

Let me know! Thanks :)

Hi samsam -I honestly don’t know how much they do or can factor in things like you are talking about. BTW, my empathy for that. I went through very much the same in junior high (which shows how old I am, no one has junior high any more, do they?). Not that I was primary caretaker, but 3 years of hospitals and the like for my Mom. It isn’t easy.

I think you will get your letter any day now. As far as the merit, it is always tough to predict. My best guess is the Academic Achievement Award, $15,000. If that ACT were just a point higher I would feel more confident about it. But without seeing the rest of your record, it is very hard to say. I hope it is that or better for you. Good luck!

Thanks, Fallenchemist.

I just received the letter, and no aid was given…not a single dollar. Tulane was my number 2 choice but may have just fallen off the radar somewhat, as I cannot really expect too much from need-based when I apply in the fall. Although we have no income and not many assets, I can’t imagine that they’d pay for most of it. Gonna have to work it out. Do you know of any other scholarships that I could potentially apply for?

Really a bummer that I wasn’t considered. You win some, you lose some…right?

And I’m sorry to hear about your mother.

I got my letter today! Presidential Scholar and Honors Program! It went from my last choice to a serious contender!

I am sure you meant that in the most endearing of ways

Oh most definitely! I did not mean for that to come across so rudely! What I meant was, I applied to Tulane on a whim, already having 5 or 6 schools that I really loved, but now I think I’m going to visit and am definitely considering it! No disrespect meant! It’s an amazing school that I am very fortunate to have been offered aid to  :)

samsam - thanks for your condolence.

It is a shame that there was no offer. It was rather borderline as I indicated. The only thing I can suggest is that you take the SAT or the ACT again and see if you can improve the score. If it goes up, you might be able to get something. Just a thought.

zazzle - That’s great news! I thought that would be the case (post #150). As you may have seen on here a number of times, there are many students that, just like you, only put Tulane into serious consideration when they got the great offer. Then after visiting, many students decide on Tulane. The visit is really crucial for a student with the choices you are likely to have.

Are you applying for the DHS? Sounds like you might be a candidate.

@ FC:

I sent an e-mail to my admissions officer asking if there was anything I could do for them to reconsider. This past semester I got a 4.67 GPA in all my classes, despite my mom being bedridden and whatnot. Maybe he’ll respond with some good news! :)

Thanks for all your help. It really means a lot :)

samsam: fingers crossed!
