I Got into Duke!!!

I had been waitlisted, but they called me today, and I was offered a spot!

Wow!!!

I am going to accept the admission, but I need to review the offer, specifically the financial aid, because I recieved a full tuition scholarship to another school I have absolutely fallen in love with (Washington and Lee), and unless Duke really came through with big bucks, I will probably have to pass.

I accepted the waitlist on a whim. This is incredible.

Has anyone else heard so far?

Congrats GottaStayFlyy! I've heard many great things about Duke. But, if you got a full scholarship somewhere else i would say go there. Good luck with your decision!

W&L is a good school, but if it is possible to afford Duke without getting into massive debt, I would recommend it.

Congratulations! From where do you hail?

ckmets13: I don't think I want to go into debt for undergrad. I plan on continuing my education (law school?) and that is when I will feel comfortable taking on debt.

coastie: As per demographics, I am a white male from the mid-Atlantic region.

By the way, I was a Trinity applicant, and if I decide not to enroll, someone else will get my spot! Good Luck!

Trust me, I wouldn't have imagined turning down Duke. I might put my Why Duke essay on here just to show how much I love the place. I even mentioned on my application that I had been a fan of Duke bball since the days of Christian Laettner and Grant Hill.

And for anyone curious, I sent in my waitlist card - and that was it. I did not call admissions, write them a letter, bake them a cake, or do much of anything beyond demonstrate interest back in my initial application.

Best of luck to all fellow waitlistees, and don't feel down if you are not admitted. It's freaking Duke! My friend with a 2390 was rejected!

awesome! go '10ers!

Congrats! I got the call a week and a half ago too. I turned down half tuition at USC to go to Duke. No choice was needed.

However, W&L is a great school. Especially with a full ride vs. debt at Duke. Good luck in your decision! You can't go wrong!

I'm extremely interested to see how waitlisted students do this year at Duke. It's going to be the first indication of whether or not this rape allegation is going to affect admissions standards.

The rape allegations have will have no effect on whatever I decide.

- and it didn't happen, so what's the problem?

I have absolutely no problem with it, but I know a lot of people who do. It won't affect a LOT of people, but it could easily affect a large enough percentage to be noticable.

Hey, Congrats!

CYA next year.

:)

Keep in mind, however, that the rape allegations probably will not be the main cause for waitlist action this year. There is a much more widespread variable involved - the fact that this year, applications were up at EVERY SCHOOL, which means one of two things. Either a) more students were waitlisted than usual to prepare for this, in which case more schools would be taking more students from the waitlist. Or b) more people will be turning down acceptances at schools since they applied to so many other places and were accepted, meaning that the schools will have to go to the waitlist. Either way, there will be more students coming from the waitlist everywhere - not just at Duke, and not just because of the lax scandal.

Good points. However, something could certainly be derived if there was a difference in the percentage rise of waitlist enrollments at Duke, as opposed to the national average.

I don't think there is any difference in quality between a waitlisted student and an accepted student (and in fact, most students who were rejected were fine applicants as well, i'm sure). But then again that's my biased opinion as a waitlisted student. So, their admit rate may be higher off the waitlist, but i do not believe that this is a decrease in standards.

I'm sorry, "standards" was a poor choice of word. It seems as though if there is an unexpectedly low number of matriculating students, more students would have to be taken off the wait list. It would then be reasonable to infer that the university would accept a higher percentage of applicants next year.

Keep in mind that Duke overenrolled last year; they had specifically stated that they would be using the waitlist extensively this year after last year's situation. If what you're getting at is whether or not the LAX scandal will have an affect on the selectivity of Duke, I think absolutely not- as I've said before on here, I have yet to hear of a single student who decided not to go to Duke because of an alleged event involving a small proportion of the student population. Just take a look at all the Chances threads popping up here on CC- some of the most highly qualified applicants in the nation are still strongly interested in Duke.
